This species of fern was obtained by selection and, in fact, is a hybrid of the widely known Thai fern. Bred Vindelov's fern by the company Tropica Aquarium Plants, which was once founded by Holger Vindelov, in whose honor the new species was named. The plant is characterized by unpretentious care and resistance to various diseases that other varieties of Thai fern are susceptible to. Features, content and photos of Vindelov's fern we will consider in this article.
Rules for planting fern in an aquarium
Planting a plant is required exclusively in bright places in the aquarium. This is necessary to obtain a beautiful healthy bush that can only be grown in a well-lit aquarium. It looks especially beautiful in the foreground, next to the decorative elements of the bottom. It is noteworthy that the maintenance of Vindelov's fern can also be carried out under shading conditions, but in this case the bush will have small size and less saturated color of the petals. During the initial planting, you need to fix the plant in the ground. To do this, the fern is tied to snags or soil elements with a thread. This procedure is carried out so that before rooting, which occurs, as a rule, up to 15 days - the algae does not float. When a fern grows in favorable conditions for it, it tends to change the appearance of the aquarium decor and grow to incredible sizes, so it requires periodic pruning.
Content Features
The Vindelov plant, like the rest of the Thai fern species, is extremely thermophilic, therefore it should be kept at a temperature of at least 20 degrees Celsius. In this case, the water hardness parameters should be in the range of dH 2-12. Stiffness must be monitored, because at its higher rates in fern, one can observe darkening of leaves. Water must be filtered regularly and partially replaced. As a rule, 10% of the total volume of water in the aquarium is replaced. In order to ensure intensive growth of the fern, it is planted near the aerator or filter, as the circulation of water has a positive effect on its growth.
Any substrate is used as the soil, since the algae receives all the substances it needs from the water, and the roots serve only to fix on the soil surface.
Neighborhood and compatibility with other inhabitants
The root system of Vindelov's fern is distinguished by its fragility, which excludes the possibility of its maintenance along with fish that dig in the ground. These are, first of all, agamixis, almost all types of aquarium catfish and cichlids. However, there are representatives of the aquatic environment that get along well with the Vindelov algae. These include swordsmen, scalars and fish, who love to eat fresh vegetation. Vindelov's fern petals are saturated with an enzyme that is inedible for fish.
Of the representatives of the plant world, cryptocoryne and hornwort can successfully coexist with fern. It is not recommended to plant next to Wallisneria, which does not tolerate intense lighting and slows the growth of Thai-type ferns.
Vindelova fern gained wide popularity among aquarium breeders, due to its high decorative qualities and ease of care. Today, many aquarists plant whole underwater gardens of this fern at home.
