Each language has its own difficulties and subtleties in learning. Probably, most will agree that the most difficult moment in learning English is the verb-exceptions or, as they are also called, irregular verbs. The difficulty of this is also confirmed by statistics on speech errors most often committed by foreigners. More than half of them relate precisely to those cases where you need to use verbs-exceptions. English language directly depends on the verb, which is why the correctness of its use has such a significant place in the study of this subject.
To create various temporary structures, three forms of the verb are used. Standard verbs (regular verbs) conjugate in tenses by adding the ending –ed (-d) to the infinitive. While conjugation of irregular verbs is just a thing to remember.
Most verbs are standard. In this case, it is enough to know the infinitive to form any necessary form.
Irregular verbs originate from the Old English language. They are based on the old rules for the formation of temporary forms. Some of them are of foreign origin. Thanks to the young American version of English, some non-standard verbs have acquired the ability to conjugate as standard. Although it should be noted that even this version of the language has its own irregular verbs, which the British do not have. These local characteristics have led to the fact that even native speakers sometimes experience difficulties. That is why finding a really complete list of irregular verbs is almost impossible. However, learning them is still necessary.
Just because exclusion verbs are often used in speech, their forms are so firmly rooted in the language. Of the more than 500 verbs, about 200 are actively used in everyday speech. A story about exception verbs would be incomplete without resorting to insufficient verbs. They do not have a conjugation form at any time. For example, can / could, will / would, must and some others. They are often studied separately, since the rules for their use are quite complex.
It is best to start learning non-standard verbs with the 50 most used. The rest will come to speech gradually as it improves. Teachers recommend first of all to study their pronunciation well and to devote some time to their reading. After that, you can begin to memorize directly. Today, there are many proven ways for long-term memorization. It is necessary to choose according to the principle - which method is more understandable and affordable. To memorize the pronunciation, the best way to listen to the recording, for example, when you are on the road.
Exception verbs will be remembered even better if you add a video sequence to your listening. However, this method will require specially allocated time. Another way to connect visual memory is to make cards yourself. Moreover, it is advisable not to print them, namely to write by hand. The convenience of this method is that those cards that are already well remembered can be temporarily put aside, replacing them with new ones.
A very good way to group exclusion verbs according to the principle of the formation of tenses. For example, write separately those words where all three forms are the same, the third and second coincide, or where all forms are different.
However, the best way, albeit rarely used, is the method of compiling proposals. In this case, the word is remembered directly in the context. Moreover, vocabulary is being activated. You can write the same sentence at different times, you can invent another.
And no matter what method is chosen, do not forget about repetition. And pretty soon, non-standard verbs will be a natural element of speech.
