Since the tenth version of the Windows operating system is the most popular today, many users want to install it. Unfortunately, quite often the problem arises that when upgrading Windows 10 hangs at 99 percent of the process. What is the reason and how to deal with it, see below.
Windows 10 update hung: the most common symptoms
In general, the freezing of the upgrade process to the "top ten" at exactly 99 percent is far from the only problem. In fact, there are still a lot of situations with similar symptoms when the process is hanging dead weight.
Among all that occurs, the following points are distinguished:
- receiving updates;
- installation of updates (25%);
- copying files (84%);
- system installation (25, 32, 44 and 99%).
In all cases when the upgrade to Windows 10 hung up by 99%, the LED signaling access to the hard disk stops flashing and remains on. You can return the computer to its original state by forcing a restart by long pressing the power button and then turning it on. But in this case, the update will be completely canceled.
Of course, provided that the user on board has the minimum configuration necessary to install Windows 10 and the connection is too slow, the above processes can only seem to hang. In fact, they simply can take too much time (even about 20 hours). Nevertheless, we will dwell on the case when the Windows 10 update hung at 99 percent. What can be done in such a situation?
Windows 10 update freezes at 99 percent: what's the problem
There are a lot of reasons for the occurrence of such failures. It should be borne in mind that the conflict can manifest itself at the level of software and hardware, even if it meets the minimum requirements.
Sometimes the problem may be the presence of several hard drives. According to Microsoft representatives themselves, Windows 10 freezes when a removable SD memory card is inserted in the card reader. The same symptoms are typical for cases when files are copied to a removable USB-drive. True, the process can be completed over time, but Windows itself will become unlicensed, and it is completely incomprehensible why.
Finally, a failure can be observed in the service of the "Update Center", if the upgrade is carried out with its help.
Problems with drives and removable devices and remedies
But back to the situation when the Windows 10 update freezes 99%. In the case of additional hard drives and SD memory cards, the problem can be solved quite simply.
The card should be removed from the card reader, and if possible, disconnect the hard drives by pulling the appropriate SATA cables from the connectors of the hard drives. In addition, it is advisable to completely disconnect all other peripheral devices, leaving only a monitor, keyboard and mouse (for laptops - only a mouse). Perhaps, if the Windows 10 update is already hanging, the problem can be solved in this way.
Crash while receiving updates
Another solution to the problem, when Windows 10 freezes at some stage of the upgrade, is to deactivate the update service itself, because it is it that provokes failures of this type in the source system.
To do this, what is called a βkillβ process follows. It is impossible to shut down the service in the Task Manager, so you will have to use the special section called up from the Run menu (Win + R) with the services.msc command.
In the right window of the editor that appears, you need to find the Windows Update service, and then right-click the context menu where the βStopβ line is selected. Do not forget that the antivirus software installed in the old system can also negatively affect the upgrade, so you should deactivate it during the update process by selecting the pause protection command in the corresponding menu (either for the maximum possible time, or until the next reboot) .
Windows Update Diagnostics
Now let's look at another common situation. If the Windows 10 update freezes by 99%, you can try to fix the problem using the diagnostic system utility to check the operation of the update center itself.
To do this, first call the "Run" console, where we write the line msdt / id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.
In the window that appears, use the "Advanced" line, which is located below, in the new window, put a checkmark in front of the line for automatically applying corrections, click on the launch link as administrator and click the "Next" button. After that, it remains to follow the instructions of the system, and at the end of the diagnostic process, it will be safe to proceed with the re-installation of the βtensβ.
What is the result?
As you can see, there can be a lot of situations when Windows 10 freezes at some stage of upgrade, and each of them has its own solution. True, sometimes problems can be observed in an already installed system. For example, very often Windows 10 freezes when looking for updates. It is difficult to say what it is connected with. Perhaps the problem is in poor communication, perhaps some already installed package is affecting the update. In general, such cases were not considered intentionally, since the described type of battles refers specifically to attempts to update the existing OS to the tenth version. But here, too, initially you need to find out the cause of the computer freezing and only then make a decision to fix the problem (although, as it is believed, all the above tools are good, regardless of the root cause). At worst, if nothing helps at all, itβs better to download a βcleanβ installation distribution, completely remove the old system, and only then install Windows 10 (and even format all the hard drives and logical partitions).
