Geophysical Well Research: Varieties and Applications

One of the main issues in hydrogeology is the geophysical study of wells. This is an important process. Many companies are currently resolving this issue with generally accepted logging or exploration methods. However, in some cases, they can use other modern technical means.

Process varieties

Over a long period of work on the study of wells, specialists have developed various logging methods, including geophysical and radioactive.

When deciding on the choice of a particular reconnaissance method, as well as on its implementation, it is necessary to ensure the reliability, speed of research, in understanding the necessity and expediency of its implementation and maintaining its profitability.
Therefore, when performing geophysical research of wells, traditional logging methods are used in our time in conjunction with innovative ones. Their goal is to study the section and the discovery of aquifers in it. This applies to wells both without trunk protection, and fenced with metal or plastic.

There are various geophysical methods for researching wells, but the main ones are:

  • high frequency induction;
  • gamma ray logging;
  • electric;
  • video logging;
  • Method of spontaneous polarization potentials.

The most effective is gamma-ray logging. It allows you to divide the layer into lithographic elements and distinguish aquifers and clay intervals.

Now quite often, wells are cased with plastic pipes. They protect the structure from deformation during the movement of rocks. This increases the need to apply such a geophysical study of the wells, which will allow to study the electrical properties of the rocks through the constructed barrier. However, in this case, traditional logging methods based on the use of conduction currents are unacceptable. The best option would be to use high frequency induction techniques. In the technical analysis of wells, video logging and magnetic location are used. A method such as cavernometry can also be used. When applying video logging, carrying out geophysical research of wells, they mainly use a color video camera of the latest development. It gives a higher resolution when displaying the side walls of the object being checked.

Tip

If work is carried out in carbonate rock, which is prone to cracking, the correct cementing of the well is very important. This process should be approached with particular attention. Quality control of cementing is achieved using acoustic scanning methods. This method in this case is important. As a result of acoustic scanning, defects in cementing are detected that can violate the tightness of the casing, and the technical condition of the profile and the walls of the column is determined.

Total

All these methods make it possible to provide high-quality field geophysical studies of wells. They are the most effective in this process. At the same time, an operational solution to such issues as lithographic research (dissection) of the rocks through which the well passes, an assessment of the technical equipment of the well itself, the capacity of the aquifer intervals and the filtration quality of the rocks is achieved, and the quality of the produced water is also determined.
