Russian literature allows not only to enjoy the masterpieces of world culture, but also gives an idea of the richness of the language. Unfortunately, some words that turn out to be unfamiliar to many modern people are often found on the pages of classical works. Among them is the adverb "in vain." This short word is very capacious and appropriate in many situations, although today it is rarely used in colloquial speech.
Foggy origin
Philologists could not precisely establish the etymology. Fasmer did a great job, pointing to the old Slavonic “tune”, which stands for:
free of charge;
in vain;
for nothing;
for nothing.
It is easy to catch a certain consonance. So, the word “parasite” is called related, which can be decomposed into “a person who eats without bestowal.” Otherwise - a parasite.
Modern use
During live communication, this word is pretty hard to hear. It is characteristic of people of the older generation, as well as those who have not abandoned reading and are well acquainted with the book language. What does the speaker mean? The meaning of “in vain” differs little from the interpretations of the old Russian predecessor. It includes:
not reaching the goal;
uselessly;
in vain.
It may be a certain occupation, ideas, achievements, which, despite the efforts made, the time and money spent, do not find the proper response in the minds and hearts of others, do not bring dividends. For example, someone else's experience will be useless for a person, will be lost in vain, as well as the unrealized fruits of any labor on time.
In parallel, the dialect under investigation has an outdated interpretation of “without attention”. She was just conversational, appropriate in personal communication or in letters, but is no longer used today. The interlocutor, acting as a supplicant, added a similar phrase so that his wishes would not be put off the shelf, not forgotten.
Everyday communication
A colorful word will decorate the lexicon. "Woon" is a sonorous, noble in its own way concept, associated with the classical literary Russian language. However, inappropriate at the household level: it is too distracted from modern standards. You can add to a public speech to focus the attention of listeners, dilute the conversation on abstract topics, but you should not add to official documents or reports.
The definition does not have a clear negative value, it rather warns against rash acts. Allows you to convey the entire degree of anxiety, mental anguish associated with the speaker with any case. If you want to indicate your involvement in the process, feel free to use!
