"Nerd" as a medical diagnosis
It is clear that when it came to the word “nerd,” people immediately think of its colloquial meaning, which is the same as “fool” or “idiot”. But sometimes people use the words "idiot" and "nerd" in their direct meaning, primordial. This is the name of a person who has a serious developmental delay. The physiological reasons are to blame, and more specifically, the thyroid gland is not working properly.
Therefore, if the doctor said about a nerd, perhaps you should not stretch your lips in a smile, because it is a serious matter. The thing is that nerd people have become so by the will of the blind lot of fate.
The spoken version of the term
But people far from medicine have heard the word “nerd” more than once, perhaps even in their address. Imagine a person delays the delivery of a report or a project in general. And his boss is not the most polite in the world. And so the employee goes to the manager’s office, and he asks him:
- Petrov, where is the finished project? Where is at least a progress report?
- Nikolai Ivanovich, I thought that there was still time. You see, yesterday was the wife’s birthday ...
- Petrov, tell me, are you really a nerd or pretend to be? What is wife’s birthday ?! If you lose your job, then there will be nothing for you to celebrate! Got it ?! Go on. So that in the evening the project was completed, otherwise from tomorrow you will no longer work here!
It is not known whether Petrov did the job, but one thing is certain: his unfortunate fate helped us understand the meaning of the word "nerd" in his colloquial form. If someone needs clarification, then a nerd in the usual sense is a narrow-minded, stupid person. Or someone who does not know how to correctly prioritize, make the right choice and gives the impression of an idiot, although by himself he may be a good person and not at all a fool. But the circumstances were such that someone appeared in an unfavorable light, like Petrov from the example. Do you think he has a problem with his head? Not at all, he just loves his wife very much, but this cannot be explained to the boss. Now the question of who the nerd is who he is should not arise. It remains to clarify some details.
National features. Russian and American films
There is one interesting observation. Russian movie heroes are not very fond of, and accordingly, they rarely use the word nerd in the common sense. And why? Because to the Russian ear this word still seems to be foreign. And few people would be surprised if they suddenly ask: "Nerd - who is this?" And they will take an interest without any back thought.
Domestic heroes, if they swear, then with the more familiar names “fool”, “idiot”. Despite the fact that the last word also has a foreign origin (Greek), it is somehow perceived by a Russian person as simpler and more familiar. What can I say, because the novel by Fedor Mikhailovich is called "The Idiot". And mentally replace the “idiot” with the “nerd” and you will feel the sand hit your teeth. The word "nerd" does not lie on the soul.
So, our movie heroes curse literaryly and do not even suspect about it. As for the Western tradition, there the influence of Dostoevsky is not so great. Anyway, the "nerd" is somehow closer to them. For proof, you can turn to foreign cinema. It’s rare when you meet that villains swear “in Russian”. After all, the point is not only in the original language, but in the fact that translators also translate accordingly, and you rarely hear a “fool” or a “moron,” but a “cretin” is forever.
But please, do not take these thoughts as a serious study, because the basis of such an observation is based on deeply subjective experience.
And the truth is that now less and less people are asking the question: “And who the nerd is who?” The word enters the Russian language through modern books, but all this is the influence of Western tradition. In any case, Ivan the Fool is closer and dearer to us.
Why is truth evil?
There is one paradox in matters of truth. For example, a healthy person can be called a nerd, and he will not be offended, but if someone says this about a sick child or an adult, then people will immediately think: the foul language has no heart.
As always, a little morality in the end. Modern trends are such that now people tend to smooth corners and not tell the truth. Even a doctor who observes a “special child” will say that he has a lag in mental and physical development, and he will not dare to call a spade a spade, because the truth hurts. Much depends on the wording; it can take away hope or give it. Good or bad is another matter.
Now about whether to call a healthy person anyway? It all depends on the situation, tone and individual qualities of the interlocutors. If a person is deprived of a sense of humor or it is unpleasant for him that his name is even joking, it is better not to resort to rudeness. In general, it is better to get rid of barbs.
Now there should be no difficulties in the question: "Nerd - who is this?" But you should adhere to one simple rule: you need to think about what to say and to whom, then there will be no problems.
