Pickled onions are a great addition to fish, meat, and seafood dishes. It is also often added to various salads. You can pickle onions for herring or barbecue, season with mayonnaise and get a delicious monosalad.
If we talk about the classic recipe, then its main ingredient will be vinegar. It has long been used for pickling various products, including onions. Every housewife understands that pickling onions in herring vinegar is quick, easy and does not require much effort. However, not everyone likes the spicy, biting, sometimes overly piquant flavor of seasoning. Today we will tell you how you can marinate a fish onion in other ways, in addition to using table vinegar.
Vinegar
If the taste and smell do not scare you, then for starters we will touch on the recipe for pickling onions in vinegar. To prepare snacks you will need:
- vinegar (9 %) - 9 tablespoons (tablespoons);
- 4 onions;
- 65 g of sugar;
- greens;
- 240 ml of water;
- 0.5 tablespoons (tea) salt.
How to cook
Add sugar and salt to warm water. Stir until the bulk ingredients dissolve. Add acid. Cut the onion into thin half rings, dip it gently into the resulting marinade. The time the vegetable is in the composition is 25-35 minutes.
Lemon juice
How to pickle onions under a herring, if there is no love for vinegar? What can replace this product in the marinade? Of course, lemon juice. To prepare the second version of the marinade, approximately three lemons will be required, from which about 40-50 ml of juice should be squeezed.
Ingredients
It is necessary to prepare:
- lemon juice;
- ground black pepper;
- sugar;
- 40 ml of vegetable oil;
- salt.
How to quickly pickle herring with lemon juice? Firstly, it is necessary to squeeze this very juice. And be sure to strain it. Mix with ground pepper and salt, stir until the ingredients dissolve. Add oil. Stir again. Now it's the turn of the bow. It needs to be cleaned, cut into half rings or rings. Pour onion with marinade. Leave on for 20-25 minutes. For a richer flavor and piquancy, you can add zest with lemon to the marinade.
Lemon with honey
You can marinate herring for herring using two products that are opposite in taste: sour lemon and sweet honey. To prepare the marinade you will need:
- 40 ml of lemon juice;
- a pinch of salt;
- greens;
- 6 ml of liquid honey;
- ground coriander;
- ground red pepper.
Onions for this recipe can take from 100 to 150 grams.
Cooking process
The peeled onion is cut into half rings. Then it is poured with salt and set aside for a while.
Pour oil into a frying pan, slightly warm. Then pour coriander, pepper and finely chopped greens into it. We pass the spices. Pour liquid honey into the oil and mix gently. Remove from heat. Let cool a little. Now combine with lemon juice. We send onion half rings to a warm marinade. We leave it in it for half an hour.
Mineral water
You can marinate onions for herring or barbecue with water. Not simple, of course, but mineral. We take a glass of water, heat it in a microwave and pour it into a container. We send the onion half rings there. You can also add bay leaf, a pinch of salt, a little ground black or red pepper. Leave the onion in the mineral water for 35-45 minutes. Then we get it, transfer it to another container, pour it with olive oil.
Mustard and Balsamic Vinegar
These two ingredients combine perfectly with each other and are great for pickling herring properly. If you do not like the taste of table vinegar or the smell is too bright, then it can always be replaced with balsamic. Mustard (it is better if it is sweet Dijon with grains) will be only a pleasant addition to vinegar. Composition:
- 2 tablespoons (tablespoons) of mustard;
- 1.5 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar;
- on a pinch of marjoram, cumin, salt;
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

This version of the marinade can be called dry: after all, there is no water in the list of ingredients. Peel the onion, chop. Fill the rings with balsamic vinegar, add mustard and mix gently. It is impossible to pickle herring for spices without spices, so add ground pepper, cumin, salt and marjoram. We send the dishes with the pickled onion for two to three hours in the refrigerator.
For winter

- 5 peas of allspice;
- 2 tbsp. tablespoons of table or apple vinegar;
- 4 buds of cloves;
- a pinch of salt;
- granulated sugar (to taste);

How to make a spin
The products listed above are mixed together. Onions are cut into half rings, then boiled in water a little over medium heat. Vegetable preparation time is 5-7 minutes. As soon as the water with onions boil, turn off the heat.
Now pour the water into the container and add the ingredients for the marinade to it. We put it on gas again, bring to a boil and turn it off.
