Human behavior in a conflict situation: models and basic recommendations for overcoming them

Human behavior in society is determined by a variety of both external and internal causes. On the one hand, motives, needs, and value orientations are a kind of “lever” that starts a person’s activity in the outside world . But on the other hand, society often defines and shapes them. Therefore, human behavior in society is very complex and constantly changing. Especially when it comes to conflict situations.

Models of human behavior in such cases may be different. The fact is that conflict always means a special confrontation, when the parties could not agree among themselves. Further human behavior will be determined by one of the models identified by social psychologists.

The first strategy is the following. The behavior of a person is quite active, because he is offended, angry and annoyed. The emotional component pushes him constantly to actions that are expressed either in constructive actions, or (more often) in aggressive (verbal and nonverbal). Therefore, such a strategy of behavior can become both useful in resolving the conflict, and prolonging it. The basic recommendation in this case is to try to relate to the situation that arises more simply.

Human behavior in the second model is characterized by the following trends. A person is constantly angry and offended, but does nothing in order to resolve a conflict situation. If the subject chooses a similar strategy, then this can lead to the formation of despondency, depression and psychosomatic diseases.

In the third model, a person’s behavior is distinguished by the fact that he leaves the conflict and tries to do nothing. The subject is not angry, and also eliminated from everything. Moreover, he does not even take offense. There is a kind of fencing off from a traumatic situation. Full, trained or natural - it does not matter. The main thing is that in such a situation it can be very difficult for a person to “reach out”.

The fourth model of behavior in a conflict situation is characterized by the fact that the subject is not angry or offended. But he is taking a series of active actions in order to change the situation. A man absolutely soberly assesses the conflict that has arisen, trying to fight back if necessary and solve the problem with a minimum amount of losses for himself and for those around him.

With the fifth model of behavior, a person begins to change not her, but his attitude to it. It is based on the understanding that the situation cannot be immediately changed. Therefore, the main strategy is to change yourself. A person begins to calm down, put himself and his thoughts in order. He is trying to highlight what is a priority, which can be treated calmly, and which should be very tough to answer.

Therefore, if you highlight the main recommendations on how to get out of the conflict, you need to be sure that the best model is an active position and a fourth model of behavior. Since it implies the presence of active actions in order to change the existing situation.

It is recommended to find the main causes of the conflict, try to rationally identify the main approaches to its resolution. Further, the most important thing is to agree with your opponent.

Care must be taken to avoid open conflict situations. But when they occur, you should maximize and clearly regulate behavior, as well as limit your emotional losses. Otherwise, the conflict situation will develop constantly along an increasing line.

Be calm, confident in yourself and reasonably approach any conflict situation, and then it will be safely resolved.
