Ural Diesel Engine Plant LLC is a large domestic manufacturer of high-power diesel power units for locomotives, ships, and small power plants. Located in the city of Yekaterinburg. Included in the Sinara group of companies.
Historical reference
The foundation of the Ural diesel engine plant (UDMZ) is connected with the Great Patriotic War. In 1941, Kharkov Plant No. 75 and the motor section of the Kirov (Leningrad) Plant were evacuated to Yekaterinburg. Based on them, the production of tank power units B2-34 was founded.
After the war, UDMZ specialized in the production of powerful unique engines of the DM-21 series. They were used at BelAZ trucks, specialized equipment (in particular, in the ChTZ T-800 tractors with a traction force of 75 tons), and in power plants. In the 90s, the manufacture of diesel engines for ships was mastered.
The entry of the Ural diesel engine plant into the structure of the Sinara group of companies (2008) contributed to the modernization of production facilities, the opening of new workshops, and the attraction of investments. Since 2012, UDMZ has been launching a new series of power units DM-185, corresponding to the best world standards.
Designing new motors
Ural diesel engine plant began developing diesel engines of the DM-185 family in 2012. As part of the targeted federal program, the company signed a contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade for the production of basic samples of new generation high-speed diesel engines.
In a short time, a production site was organized for the production of units and components, as well as the assembly of power units. In addition to specialists from the Ural diesel engine plant, the Central Research Institute of Diesels, MSTU, UFU, and the German engineering company FEV took part in the development. In total, the project involved more than one hundred designers, 30 engineers, and investments exceeded 2 billion rubles. Such a fruitful cooperation allowed us to translate advanced engineering solutions into the design.
Specifications
At the moment, the DM-185 family has 9 engine models with a wide range of power characteristics (from 1000 to 4000 kW) and 7 diesel generators. The number of cylinders varies from 6 to 20, depending on version and application. In the future, the maximum power of some models is planned to be brought up to 6000 kW.
Products
The first high-speed 12-cylinder diesel engine 12DM-185T was assembled in October 2014. A month later, he was subjected to comprehensive tests, which showed compliance with the required characteristics.
The next at the Ural diesel engine plant assembled a 16-cylinder modification 16DM-185T2 with a two-stage turbocharging capacity of 3740 kW. The power unit is designed for use in diesel locomotive manufacturing. In July 2015, the engine, so necessary for Russian engineering, was presented to Prime Minister Dmitry A. Medvedev at the Innoprom forum.
In parallel, work was underway on the 12DM-185A motor for BelAZ mining dump trucks. This project has broad prospects in the framework of interstate cooperation of the countries of the Customs Union. It is designed to reduce dependence on foreign mining equipment and imported components.
Production complex
A large-scale modernization program is being carried out at the Ural diesel engine plant. Old production buildings have been renovated on the outside and inside. Partially replaced equipment, updated test station. Created 100 highly qualified jobs.
The pride of the plant is a modern site for the assembly, running-in of DM-185 motors and diesel generators, and temporary storage of products. High-precision measuring systems are mounted here to control the parameters of engine components.
Moreover:
- All engineering systems have been upgraded.
- Optimized production logistics.
- Production capacity was doubled to 300 units.
- Updated warehouse equipment.
- Built washing and spray booths.
- The old cranes were modernized and new bridge cranes equipped with a radio control system were installed.
On the experimental assembly site, universal stands were installed for the manufacture of power units. Multi-ton products can be easily moved around the workshop with the help of transport systems on airbags controlled by one worker.
Test station
The quality of the assembled motors is checked at unique automated stands. During the reconstruction of the test station, modern equipment was introduced. It:
- Engineering block located next to the production and testing areas.
- Research stand for 1-cylinder engines up to 408 kW.
- Functional and life test stands for engines and generators with a power of 3000-4000 kW.
Ural diesel engine plant: reviews
Factory workers note a decent level of earnings (especially among highly qualified employees), working conditions in the updated areas are comparable to those in European enterprises. The introduction of mechanization and the installation of new equipment facilitated the work of workers.
Today, UDMZ is a model of a modern enterprise, where equal attention is paid to labor productivity, product quality, working conditions, industrial culture and safety. It is not surprising that the plant is a desirable place of work both for representatives of working professions and for engineering and technical personnel.
