Quite often in different areas of life we ​​come across the phrase "default." What does it mean? Let's find the answer to this question. And also consider in which particular industries this expression is most often used.
What is “default”: common value
This expression is used in the case when it comes to the standard (factory) settings of some device, program. They are selected by developers from the whole variety of possibilities and are characterized by universality. However, they are not always suitable for each user. Therefore, if desired, everyone can adapt the settings for themselves.
As an example, consider a satellite dish receiver. Since most of these devices are manufactured in China for export, the manufacturer does not know exactly what language is spoken in the country where the receiver will be used. Therefore, the main thing is set to English, since everyone knows it at least at the level of "understand yours". The calculation is that the vocabulary is enough for the user to find the language section in the menu and reconfigure to his own language, or at least well-known to him.
This practice of establishing English as basic is common in most menus for equipment sold in European countries. This is one of the parameters of the universal factory default settings. They are understandable to all consumers, but not always convenient for them, therefore, they are further adjusted.
How to translate to other languages
In English, this revolution is denoted by one word default.
Paradoxically, in the language of Shakespeare, the term also means "default", as well as various other legal duties.
In Ukrainian, the appropriate phraseology is used "for zamovchuvannyam." It seems that it was tracing paper from Russian, just like the Belarusian "pas zachўannі". This is evidenced by the fact that in other Slavic languages ​​the studied revolution is not formed from "keeping silent".

For example: “In the Opera, you can set the Yandex search engine by default both during the installation of the browser itself and after it.”
In this sentence, the phrase means that the search engine will always appear when opening the "Opera" and the user will not need to waste time entering his address. That is, Yandex becomes a standard (automatically configured) search engine. And for this case, all two of these options can appear as synonyms.
At the same time, the word "factory" is not suitable for this example. After all, if the programmers who created Opera did not initially designate Yandex as the base search engine, it means that it is not included in the factory settings package and upon reinstalling the program (or its failure) will no longer automatically open in a new browser window.

The example mentioned above makes you wonder: is the “default” always the factory setting?
Not always. Often the expression is not applied to automatic (basic), but to automated settings. To those that were not originally standard, but became so thanks to further "tuning".
We return for example with a receiver for a satellite dish. By default, it was set to English as the main menu language. These are factory settings. At the same time, a person who is able to read this article is likely to want to rebuild the device menu into Russian. After that, every time, including the TV and the receiver, the inscriptions in it (except for the name, of course) will automatically be played in Russian.
It turns out that one linguistic "default" is replaced by another. Which leads to another answer to the question, what is the "default".
These are automated instrument settings or just programs. They can be set both by the manufacturer and by the user. However, when reinstalling the software or resetting it, the advantage will be on the side of the manufacturer’s settings.
Factory and user default
Having dealt with the question of what is “default”, we’ll talk in more detail about user-defined automated settings and factory settings.
The first is a consequence of the imperfection of the second. As we know, the most common reason for the failure of any program is its user. To simplify the recovery process after someone’s "crazy hands", each software (in case of failure) is called upon to return to the basic behavior system - "by default". But, erasing all errors made by the user, returning to the factory settings "kills" and useful programs.
For example, when reinstalling the Photoshop program, all textures, brushes, actions and styles added to it disappear from its memory, since they are not included in the "default" package. In addition to the basic set, fonts remain from the innovations. But only because they are not run by Photoshop, but in the computer OS. If it is reinstalled, then they will be reset to the factory set.
This inability to save not only harmful innovations, but also useful ones, is the main drawback of the basic settings.
To solve it today, many applications and operating systems provide their users with the service of backing up user default settings. So after resetting to the factory settings, all other programs that are not related to them will be installed automatically.
What is the "default" in the computer?
Although the concept of basic or simply automated parameters is characteristic of the entire programmable technique, most often the studied phrase refers specifically to computer technology. More precisely, the programs in it.
So what does "default" mean on a computer? Almost the same as in other related devices (tablets, Smart TV) - a universal automated set of settings specified by the developers. And in this case it happens both factory and user.
Phrase Meaning for Phones
Since most mobile phones today are proudly referred to as “smart” (that is, “smart”), for them, the phrase “by default” has a similar PC meaning. That is, the notorious factory settings: melody, screen power, a set of applications, etc.
However, with regard to the telephone (yes, some still use mobile phones for this purpose), the turnover under study has an additional connotation of interpretation. It does not replace, but supplements the core. So what does “default” mean on the phone?
During a call, it happens that the subscriber’s device is turned off or is outside the coverage of his network. In this case, the system of almost every mobile operator offers to leave a message on the answering machine, so that the missed call could listen to it as soon as its device turns on.
If earlier this was an additional paid service, today most operators have an answering machine connected to each subscriber by default "for free", that is, for nothing.

The phrase in this area is also interpreted in the usual sense: they are used when setting up specialized programs for processing documents or systematizing existing ones according to a template set by the manufacturer or user-defined.
Unlike all the examples listed, in this jurisprudence there is a consonant expression that is often mistakenly correlated with "default."
We are talking about this type of fraud, as not providing all reliable information when concluding any transaction. In fact, this is not a hoax. After all, a lie is not said, just some aspects of the truth are not voiced. They are silent.
The most common example is advertising. In it, a promoted product is praised before a potential consumer, trying not to talk about its disadvantages.
Thus, advertising “Claritin” (one of the most popular and effective anti-allergy drugs), its manufacturers are modestly silent that loratadine (the main active ingredient) that is part of it can be bought several times cheaper without overpaying for a famous brand.
More often, all information about the composition of the product is kept silent. For example, pay attention to the packaging of any baking margarine. Among the ingredients, "vegetable fat" is necessarily listed. Of course, we all sincerely hope that this is sunflower oil, complete optimists even think about olive oil. However, most often it is palm and, God forbid, food, not technical.
And if such petty silence is only annoying, then hiding the conditions of a signed contract is often much more expensive.
For example, the insanely popular fraudulent scheme for pensioners today. They receive fake messages about winning the lottery, which you can pick up only by ordering from the catalog the goods of the fraudster company for a certain amount. Inspired old people buy exorbitantly rubbish at an exorbitant price, but they never receive the promised gain.
And they can’t, in principle, because according to the terms of the promotion, buying from a catalog is not a 100% guarantee of victory. This is clearly stated in the conditions of the lottery. Here are just a form with these conditions all the time “forgetting” to retirees to send, as if by chance keeping silent about such a “trifle”.
