Fans of video products offered on the modern market or on the Internet have probably noticed more than once that an incomprehensible description with the always present word Rip (for example, HDRip or BDRip) is added to many videos. Let's see what it is.
What is rip in general?
To begin with, Rip (hereinafter referred to as “rip”) for films, clips or videos generally means extracting video and audio from some storage medium such as an optical disk or converting a signal into a single file, for example, when recording from an HDTV.
If we consider the question of whether BDRip or HDRip is better, it’s worthwhile to dwell on the basic concepts themselves. Let's see what these two types of rips are.
What is BDRip?
As for BDRip, there is a definite answer: this is the conversion of video and audio components, say, of a movie, into a single file of a different format from a Blu-ray disc. This is done using special programs. Typically, the resolution of the image with this ripping is 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 pixels.
The conversion of sound and audio signal is performed using various codecs that allow you to apply a fairly high degree of compression of the initial material and combine the somewhat inconvenient storage of complete information in one file, which after all the actions can be reproduced either on the home or in the software player.
BDRip or HDRip: which is better? It all depends only on the ability to encode the source data and on the programs used. But first things first. Let's turn to the HDRip format.
What is HDRip?
In principle, if you look, HDRip is a file-converted material from any high-resolution HD source. This may be, for example, HDDVD, HDTV television broadcast, or BDRip, selected as the source for reducing the size and changing the original file.
As a rule, in terms of picture quality, the resolution in this case is 1024 x 720 pixels, and even if BDRip files with a resolution of 720p or 1080p are selected as the source for transcoding. This conversion is carried out using the universal codec AVC.
Sometimes even in the designation HDRip you can meet your own characteristics. So, for example, regarding the quality of the picture, two writing options can be applied, say, 720p and 720i. What is the difference? The fact is that in the first case the picture is formed entirely, and in the second it consists of a pair of images (the so-called interlaced scanning).
Probably, everyone has already made a preliminary conclusion for themselves. BDRip or HDRip: which is better? Naturally, based on preliminary information, anyone will exclaim, which in quality HDRip is clearly inferior to BDRip. However, do not rush to make conclusions. Not so simple.
What is the difference between HDRip and BDRip?
Now a few words about the main differences between these two rips. We have already said about image quality. As for the final files themselves, they have different sizes and formats.
As a rule, rip from a Blu-ray disc is saved as a .mkv file (Matroska container) and usually has a size of the order of 3.5 GB or more (depending on the picture and sound quality, codecs and decoders used, etc.) .
In contrast, HDRip files can be represented as standard video data in .avi or .mp4 format . Actually, the sound is usually encoded using the LAME MP3 Encoder. Such files weigh 1.4-2.2 GB, and at maximum compression - even about 700 MB, which allows you to record them on ordinary CD-discs. It is probably already clear that the smaller the size (the greater the compression ratio), the worse the quality.
Which quality is better: BDRip or HDRIp?
In principle, as already clear, BDRip is superior to HDRip in almost all respects. This primarily concerns, of course, the image, which is obviously higher in rip from a Blu-ray disc. The same can be said for sound characteristics. For example, for HDRip you will never get surround sound, which has recently become more popular than the 7.1 format (it is also present on Blu-ray discs, though it is not always the case).
Some may argue that 7.1 can be obtained by transcoding BDRip. Nothing like this. In the best case, 5.1 sound separation will be obtained, and not above.
But now, understanding our topic (“BDRip or HDRip: which is better?”), We add a few words about the fact that you can often find situations where it would seem that the rip from the Blue-Ray disc is inferior in all respects in quality HDRip There is only one reason: the inability of the person who rips to correctly use the means of transcoding the source material.
