Mission and goals of the organization: general and various features

Any organization is created in order to carry out some tasks. If we are talking about a commercial structure, then its main goal is to make a profit, if it is about a charitable organization, then it is created in order to help those who require protection and guardianship. However, in order to make employees and management more clearly aware of what and why they are doing, the mission and goals of the organization are necessary . We will talk about what it is and how to correctly formulate a mission and goals in this article.

The mission and goals of the organization are the program provisions on which all its activities are based. Mission is the most general description of why the company was created, what task it is designed to solve. It should be noted that making a profit cannot be the mission of the company - it must be wider and show how the company can be useful to society. There is no contradiction in this, because, in the end, only being somehow useful and in demand, a company can count on its products being bought, and, therefore, on making a profit. In order to better understand what a mission is, we give examples of missions of well-known companies:

Lukoil's mission is to turn the energy of nature for the benefit of people

McDonalds' mission is to provide fast and quality service with standard products

Microsoft's mission is to help people and businesses reach their full potential with electronic technology.

The mission of Walt Disney Studios is to make people happy.

A clear distinction should be made between concepts such as the mission and purpose of the organization. If the mission is the most general description of the reason for the existence of the organization, then the goal is a clear description of the tasks that must be completed in order to make the mission a reality. The goals of the company can be short-term and long-term, as well as change in the course of its activities, while the mission remains unchanged throughout the entire period of the firm. Thus, the mission and goals of the enterprise represent a single whole philosophical core of its activities - the mission answers the question β€œwhy is our company needed?”, And the goals answer the question β€œwhat needs to be done in order to fulfill the mission and, accordingly, justify its existence ? " Only with such a core will the company carry out its activities efficiently and methodically.

There are certain requirements for the mission and goals:

The mission of the company is its statement to society, accordingly, it should be created with an eye on an external audience - consumers, competitors, regulators. The mission must necessarily show that the company is useful, moreover, it is necessary for society.

The goals of the company, on the contrary, are directed inward - towards employees, and outline before them what the company should achieve with their help in the short and long term. Therefore, if the mission can be somewhat blurred, then the goals should be as clear and understandable as possible - so they will be easier for employees to perceive, which means they will be realized faster and more effectively.

Unfortunately, the leaders of most companies of the countries of the former USSR have not yet realized that well-organized mission and goals of the organization will help them to make their work simpler and more efficient, and most importantly, aimed at results, therefore only some companies in the CIS countries have goals and, moreover, mission. I would like to hope that over time they will understand that mission and goals are not just beautiful words, but an important tool for doing business.

We hope that this article has helped our readers understand what the mission and goals of the organization are and how important they are for its successful work. I wish you success in business!
