Dostoevsky crime and punishment
Many of us probably read F.M. Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment." An interesting story is the creation of this work. It is known that the author was pushed to write it by the case of the French intellectual killer Pierre Francois Lasier, who accused the society of all its misadventures. Here is a summary of the novel. So, F. M. Dostoevsky, "Crime and Punishment."

What prompted Rodion to kill

The scene is one of the poorest districts of St. Petersburg, time is the 60s of the XIX century. Rodion Raskolnikov, now a former student, attributes the old valuable woman to her last valuable thing in order to lay it. He lives in the closet in the attic. He has no money. Reflecting on the fact that such disgusting people, like interest-holders, profiting from the distress of other people, should not live, he decides to kill the old woman. His meeting in a tavern with a drunk official Marmeladov, who tells a former student that his wife Katerina Ivanovna pushed his daughter Sonya to the panel because of poverty, strengthens Rodion in this decision. In addition to everything, the next morning our hero receives a letter from which he learns about the arrival of his mother and sister Dunya, who is supposed to marry Luzhin - a small, but wealthy man. Rodion's mother hopes that the funds of her future son-in-law will help her son continue his studies at the university. Reflecting on the victims of Sonya and Dunya, Raskolnikov convinces himself that the murder of the old percent-woman will be good for society. With acquaintance with the main character and the motives of his future crime, Dostoevsky begins “Crime and Punishment”. Heroes of the work are not divided into positive and negative. All of them are inherent in human weakness and willingness to commit a sin due to any circumstances.

Murder

In the heart of our hero two opposing feelings are fighting. One suggests that the death of the mortgagor is a foregone conclusion, while the other opposes violence. On the night before the murder, Rodion had a childhood dream. In it, the boy’s heart shrinks with pity for the skinny little horse, which is beaten to death. But, despite this, Raskolnikov still commits the murder of an old woman. Together with her, he also kills her sister Lizaveta, who witnessed the massacre. A former student hides stolen valuables in a random place, without even estimating their value. So describes the scene of the murder in the novel Dostoevsky. “Crime and Punishment” allows us not only to get acquainted with the psychology of the criminal, but also to understand the motives for his commission of this crime.

Acquaintance of Raskolnikov with Sonya and Katerina Ivanovna

After the crime, Raskolnikov feels sick. This does not remain invisible to others. Soon he heard rumors that the painter Mikolka was accused of murdering the old woman. Our hero feels strong remorse and decides to confess to the deed. But at this time he sees a carriage moving over a person. Rodion runs up and sees that it is Marmeladov. Our hero spends his last money to bring the dying man home and call a doctor to him. In the house of Marmeladov, he meets his daughter Sonya and Katerina Ivanovna. So describes one of the most significant episodes in the novel Dostoevsky. “Crime and Punishment” arouses mixed feelings among readers. Someone regrets the main character, someone treats him with disgust. I would like to believe that acquaintance with Sonechka Marmeladova will change the whole life of Rodion Raskolnikov.

Conversation of Rodion with the investigator

crime and punishment

In order to find out whether the things he had found were found, Raskolnikov comes to the investigator Porfiry Petrovich. There is a long conversation between them. The former student assures that there are two categories of people: the lowest and the highest. He says that the highest echelon has been given the right to "blood of conscience." The astute policeman suspects that the killer of old women is sitting in front of him. But he has no evidence.

Mikolka confesses to murder

This was not the last conversation of Raskolnikov with the investigator. Soon the killer, tormented by remorse and doubts about his theory, comes back to the police. The investigator manages to bring the criminal to a nervous breakdown. His upright confession is near. But unexpectedly for all, the painter from the village of Mikolka takes over the murder.

Raskolnikov's confession

It would seem that for Rodion it all ended well. He has the opportunity to avoid punishment. But thoughts of perfect crime do not give him rest. He feels the need to share them with someone. Raskolnikov goes to Sonya and tells her about everything. She regrets the killer, saying that moral torment is stronger than physical torment and offers him to atone for his sin by confession and subsequent punishment. However, Rodion does not agree with her. He does not want to feel like a "trembling creature." A former student goes home and meets investigator Porfiry, who came to convince him to confess to the murder. Rodion here is trying to evade responsibility. But soon our hero nevertheless appears at the station to make a confession. After the trial, he was sent to hard labor in Siberia. Sonya Marmeladova settles near him to share his torment with him. Gradually, the killer becomes convinced that his theory causes only chaos and death. On the path to spiritual resurrection, he picks up the gospel. Dostoevsky uploads his novel with this episode. “Crime and Punishment” was published in parts. After its publication, the work was finalized and reduced by the author. So it has come down to our days.

Despite the complexity of the problems raised, Dostoevsky's work Crime and Punishment is very easy to read. Therefore, it is recommended to read it in full.
