Currently, a large number of various structural carbon steel grades are used in practice . 08 is just one of many, but it is used quite often. The chemical composition of this raw material is established by GOST 1050-88.
Chemical composition
As for steel 08, the following substances with a certain mass fraction can be distinguished by its chemical composition:
- The amount of carbon in the composition is from 0.05 to 0.11%.
- Silicon is contained in an amount of from 0.05 to 0.17%.
- The manganese content is slightly higher - from 0.35 to 0.65%.
- The composition also includes chromium, but its content is quite small - it does not exceed 0.10%.
It is also very important to know how the name of steel 08 PS is deciphered. The numbers indicate carbon percentage. PS is an abbreviation that indicates the degree of deoxidation of steel. In a specific case, this is semi-quiet material.
Deoxidation is the process of removing oxygen. At present, three degrees of this process are known. Semi-quiet material is between boiling and completely calm. It is important to note here that it will contain all the advantages that steel has, which is subject to deoxidation by any other method.
Steel properties
As for the properties of steel 08, here the strength characteristics, as well as good indicators of hardness of the material, stand out quite strongly. In addition, the positive qualities include the fact that this brand tolerates the influence of various kinds of loads. If the load does not exceed certain indicators, then a product from such a material will completely retain its original shape. Although it is important to consider that temporary deformation under the influence of a load is possible, after which the metal will return to its previous state.
When choosing, it is also worth remembering such a factor as the yield strength. If it is exceeded, then the steel will simply begin to collapse. A good quality of steel 08 was the fact that it welds well enough. To carry out operations with such material, any welding technologies currently known can be used.
Heat treatment
The heat treatment process is a technological procedure that can improve the characteristics of the material without adding other substances to its composition. After this procedure, the strength of the metal always increases. Periodically, this treatment is used to harden those structures that will play the role of bearing. As for steel grade 08, standard hardening, tempering and annealing are used as heat treatment. The first operation is necessary in order to significantly increase the hardness of the alloy. As for vacation, it can be carried out in any environment (for example, it can be oil, water, etc.).
Vacation is used in order to get rid of the stresses that arise in the internal structure of the metal. After this operation, not only strength is increased, but also hardness. If it is necessary to eliminate unnecessary plasticity of the material, then the steel is annealed.
Machining and Application
As for machining, for steel 08 it is the removal of scale, traces of oil and other possible contaminants. To carry out these procedures, you can use hand tools, for example, brushes with metal bristles. You can also use some means of mechanization of this process, for example, it is permissible to use a grinder with a suitable circle.
The material has technological properties that allow raw materials to be bent. The procedure can be performed both on a manual bending machine, and on an automated one. In order to carry out any operations related to machining, hard alloys of the T15K6 type can be used. There is no need to use special tools.
The main operational characteristics, properties and chemical composition of steel make it possible to use it in order to produce such parts as forks, washers, pipes of different diameters and with different wall thicknesses.
Currently, there is also 08 KP steel. This is the same material, however, "KP" means that the raw materials belong to a better group. In other words, it is the same steel with the same characteristics, but with the best ratios for these parameters.
