Dutch technique. Professional Preferences Test

In secondary and high school, a career test for teenagers is a must. After all, it is important that they determine their specialty in advance. And you need to choose it not only on the basis of whether this profession is prestigious or not, but also take into account the person’s inclinations to this specialty, whether he will be able to realize his capabilities in it. One of the popular options is the Dutch test: a professional self-determination technique.

different professions

The essence of the technique

The essence of this questionnaire is that a person can achieve success only in that area that suits his personality type. The behavior of an individual is determined not only by the characteristics of his character, but also by his surroundings. A correctly selected profession (in accordance with personal qualities) allows you to realize your abilities by expressing internal value guidelines. The Dutch methodology helps to determine the student’s abilities and correlate them with a specific specialty.

What is needed

To conduct this test, you will need:

  • cards with pairs of professions;
  • a piece of paper;
  • a pen.

If you intend to conduct a survey immediately with a large number of students, then you can not give out cards to everyone, but simply read them out, and teenagers will already choose the appropriate answers. Before testing, you need to explain to children the importance of the results for them. After all, this technique allows you to determine why a person has tendencies and in which area he will be able to develop his abilities.

Instruction manual

A person is offered a choice of 43 pairs of professions (a simplified version of the questionnaire is presented in the photo below). Each of them has its own code, indicated by a letter. In a special form there are lines with the same values. Professions are placed in pairs - opposite each other. Of the two specialties, only one that is most suitable for you should be noted for yourself. If the participant does not know what kind of profession this is, then he can ask for an explanation from the person conducting the test. In the form, you need to find the corresponding letter of your favorite specialty and put a “+” sign in this line.

Next, you need to count the number of identical letters, i.e. the number of pluses. Then they select the greatest value, which will serve as a guideline for the student to belong to any professional type (there are only six of them).

Interpretation of Results

The meaning of the results

Of course, one does not need to try to “fit” a person into a specific description of character. Identification of personality type by the method of J. Golland helps a teenager understand his strengths. Some people will have more pronounced features of one group or several at once. In addition, a person is constantly improving, therefore, his views and opportunities are developing in the same way. And the results may vary slightly.

The choice of a profession for testing according to the Dutch methodology allows the teenager to see more precise guidelines in their professional activity. The guys also have the opportunity to understand their strengths and try to develop them as much as possible.

The career counseling test for teens, of course, is not designed to determine who they can definitely become. This requires an individual approach and a more thorough analysis. But this method allows you to highlight the strengths that can and should be developed.

After the survey, it is important to tell the participants about the professions that suit them, and show the prospects for development. After all, it is necessary to motivate a person in order for him to begin to grow as a professional in his field. We should not focus on its weaknesses, especially when it comes to working with adolescents. It must be emphasized that everyone has certain talents that will help them succeed.
