The Trubezh River flows into Lake Pleshcheyevo, which has the status of a National Park. Here stands the ancient Russian city of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The history of the river and its present life are full of interesting facts. What keeps the memory of the past of these places? What is the current ecological status of the Trubezh River? Which of the local attractions are associated with her name?
Numerous namesakes
The study of geographical names often surprises with a variety of curiosities of toponymy. Here, for example, Trubezh is an amazing river. It turns out that there are many similar or very similar names. And the namesake at the Trubezh River in Pereslavl-Zalessky cannot be counted, and not only in Russia.
There is a river in Ukraine with that name. There Trubezh is the left tributary of the Dnieper River 4,700 m2 with a basin area, a valley width of 5 km and about 10 m depth. It is formed there at the confluence of the Pletenki and Pavlovka rivers and, with a length of 10 km, it is used by a small fleet for a couple of kilometers only.
Ukrainian Trubezh reaches the Kanevsky reservoir, is fed mainly by snow and has a canalized channel. This water artery crosses several areas of the Kiev and Chernihiv regions (Kozeletsky, Baryshevsky, Bobrovitsky and others). Its source is in the village of Petrovsky.
But in fact, in the Dnieper basin, there are as many as five rivers called Trubezom!
Trubezh flows into the Oka River from the right side. This is the Ryazan region. The Oka basin has two Trubezhas. Trubezh also flows through the Kursk region of Russia - the right tributary of the Psel River.
There is also the Trubezh River, which flows into the famous Lake Pleshcheyevo, and takes its source in the Berendeyev swamp. This 36-kilometer river is famous for the fact that in its mouth in ancient times Yury Dolgoruky laid the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky, today's pearl of the Golden Ring of Russia.
There is a hypothesis that the coincidence of hydronyms (names of water bodies) is evidence of past migration.
But there is no clear evidence and documents confirming the relocation and the corresponding transfer of the hydronym Trubezh (as well as the name of the city of Pereslavl) from the banks of the Dnieper to Kleshchino Lake (as Plescheevo was called before).
Perhaps Prince Yuri used these names as symbols. After all, he was thinking about getting the Grand Duke of Kiev throne. There are also suggestions that as a child he lived in Pereyaslavl-Russian (today's Pereyaslavl-Khmelnitsky). And that is why he named the city founded by him at the Trubezh.
But in general, the map of the Russian Federation literally replete with the eponymous names of water bodies: Trubin and Truba, Trubyash, Trubelnya and Trubets and so on.
The names of the rivers, most likely, came from the pipe element, which means "river branch", its so-called sleeve or duct. This or a similar name is found in many modern Slavic languages.
Wait for trouble from the water. Ancient legends
In the old days in Little Russia it was believed that Trubezh was made with human hands: it was dug to drain a place for a fortification and as a reliable barrier from enemy raids.
And the inhabitants of Pereslavl-Zalessky told another legend. Allegedly, Pleshcheyevo Lake, into which Trubezh flows into, will break through and bury the whole city under its waters, and this will be the beginning of the doomsday. Some old-timers still take this prophecy seriously and expect water disasters.
Ecological condition of the river
At present, the Trubezh River in Pereslavl has noticeably become shallow, still in the middle of the last century the former was full-flowing, abounding with a variety of fish and pine coastal forests. This happened because the swamps were drained, the groundwater level decreased.
For these reasons, the course of the Trubez has become much slower than usual. The river, as they say, has become silted and overgrown. Now they are trying to clear it, at least in the area of ββthe city where it flows.
New bridge
The northern part of the city on Trubezh is connected to the southern recently reconstructed bridge. Old for a long time was in disrepair. Now decorative balls on granite pedestals flaunt on the bridge, and the coastal zone is landscaped. The bridge itself has become a safe and environmentally friendly reinforced concrete structure of three spans.
Bridge characteristicsBridge length | 68, 8 m |
Sidewalk width | 2, 25 m |
Roadway Width | 16 m |

The opening of this building in 2014, after an eight-month reconstruction, was received with great enthusiasm by the townspeople. The costumed performance was attended by Tsar Berendey and Peter I. The middle of the bridge became the place of their long-awaited meeting. And after the grand opening, the bridge was "renewed" by old cars, carriages in which mothers drove babies, and newlyweds.
Tourist Attraction
Tourists are attracted by the variegation of light boats, the memory of which they take with them on numerous photos of the Trubezh River. There are picturesque cafes at the very edge of the water, whose visitors traditionally share lunch with local ducks.
Near the reeds overgrown banks wooden moorings huddle. Many nearby houses have their own private access to the water.
At the mouth of the river stands the beautiful Orthodox church of the Forty Martyrs. This place is extremely popular with the townspeople and guests of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The view of the Trubezh River and Lake Pleshcheyevo, which opens from a specially equipped viewing platform, is truly magnificent in any weather. Church bell ringing floats above still or raging water and carries the spirit of the observer into hoary antiquity. It is thought of those times when the city rampart was built, designed to protect Pereslavl from the enemy - another attraction of the city. It is now preserved, and now its peaceful slopes have a rest from walking excursions, admiring the winding envelope of the winding satin ribbon of the Trubezh River.
