Despite the fact that Windows operating systems have a very extensive database of drivers, sometimes after installing a “clean” system, some specific (unsupported) devices refuse to work. The system does not detect them and writes in the information that a driver is not installed for such and such a device (code 28). What to do?
The easiest way to fix the error
To get rid of messages that the necessary driver is not installed or is missing (code 28), in the simplest version, you first need to check what kind of device it is.
To do this, use the "Device Manager", called either from the corresponding section of the standard "Control Panel", or from the computer properties menu. There it will be marked in yellow with a question mark. If the device is detected, its name will also be present. If not, it will be in the list of unidentified components (Unknown Device).
If you use standard methods, you need to go into the properties of the component and select the action for updating the driver (only for cases when the name and manufacturer are defined). If there is no suitable driver in the standard Windows database, you will have to use the driver disk, which is required to be supplied upon purchase. As a rule, in most cases, an error assuming that a driver is missing (code 28) can be eliminated in this way. But what if there is no such disk and the system has recently been reinstalled? Indeed, from the appearance of a message that there is no driver for the device (code 28), no one is safe.
Search for a driver on the web
In this case, you can search for the necessary software on the Internet. In the properties of the device in the same "Manager", a tab is selected containing information about the identifiers of the equipment.
Several values of VEN and DEV will be present here. The longest you just need to copy, and then search for the driver on the Internet.
Some users advise referring, for example, to the devid.info resource, which is believed to have the largest database of all currently known device drivers. This approach is useful, say, in the case when the user does not know exactly the purpose of the device or its manufacturer.
Automated Utilities
However, in the case where Windows reports that a driver is not defined for a component (code 28), you can turn to free or commercial utilities that can automatically recognize all devices present, go directly to the manufacturer’s website, look for missing ones or the latest drivers, and then install them in the system.
One of these applications is Driver Booster. It, like many similar utilities, is completely easy to use. True, most of these software products are paid.
In some cases, a reboot will be required upon completion of the process. But after that, the message that for some reason the missing driver is not defined (code 28), as they say, evaporates. A slight inconvenience is due to the fact that the program constantly hangs in the system tray and in active mode monitors the appearance of new versions of drivers. But it can easily be disabled at startup.
