How many people exist, they argue so much about what is good, what can be considered good and what is evil. And there is no end to this debate. We also want to contribute to this centuries-old discussion and to speak as representatives of the explanatory dictionary, but not only. In a word, today we are discussing the meaning of the word "good."
Dictionary Opinion
Of course, as always in such cases, we turn to authoritative sources in which everything is written down. In the explanatory dictionary there are two words that suit us, and they are written the same way - "good." We consider their meanings in sequence. "Good" is a noun:
- Good, well-being.
- That which provides wealth, well-being, satisfies needs.
It is interesting that in the first meaning something intangible is meant, and in the second - vice versa. By the way, linguistic practice shows that the second meaning is, rather, a euphemism for the word “money”. Adults, after all, are far from thinking that yachts, planes and furniture are falling directly from the air, as in the cartoons of Tex Avery. And money is always an uncomfortable topic, which is why they say "good." The meaning of the word, that is, its true content, varies depending on the speaker's desire.
In the explanatory dictionary, there is one more “good” - a union that is colloquial in nature. You must have heard it in circulation. For example: “Yes, don’t worry, I’ll pay, I have money.”
Relativity of benefits
Yes, many people understand materially as its monetary equivalent. But the icon of our days does not always bring only pleasure to the owners. For example, when a person has desires, then money is good, and if he has nowhere to spend them and they act as a tool of manipulation or pressure on others in different forms, then coins and gold do evil. But, in general, this is pretty commonplace.
Sometimes a person has everything, but what he lacks cannot be bought for money. For example, in the film “Under Suspicion” (2000), the main character had everything: a beautiful wife, a big house, a successful law practice, and no children. And no benefits could give them. In the desert, gold is metal, albeit precious, but worthless, and water is a treasure.
