- its population varies from 30 to 50 thousand people, this value depends on what task Plesetsk performs;

How does it affect the environment?
The area where the Plesetsk Cosmodrome is located, however, like any other, can hardly be called environmentally friendly. But more on that later. First, about the changes that have occurred in the environment. And they are obvious. Because the cosmodrome itself and its facilities needed to be built on a cleared area. In addition, it was necessary to erect residential buildings and infrastructure so that maintenance staff could live in the immediate vicinity of the work.
The main negative effect is the falling parts of the missiles, which are separated from them during the flight. The territory of the Arkhangelsk region has 11 fall areas. There is limited development, the land is not used for agricultural land. And all because they may contain the remains of rocket fuel. It contains the toxic substance asymmetric dimethylhydrazine and also acts as a nitrogen fertilizer, accelerating plant growth. Therefore, around cosmodromes, there is usually increased grass growth in places where fuel was spilled.
It is worth noting that in recent years the number of launches has significantly decreased. Therefore, the falling parts of the launch vehicles became smaller. In this regard, the concentration of harmful substances decreased.
In addition, the latest launches are carried out on fuel consisting of kerosene or liquid oxygen. Only sometimes missiles are flying that still use old fuel. This also significantly affects the concentration of dimethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetraxide in the environment. It changes in a smaller direction. In addition, 4 landfills have not been involved at all for several years. Some are even longer than 10.
All this applies to spilled fuel. That which burns down inside the engines does not harm due to exhaust emissions. Because they maintain such a high temperature that the fuel burns out almost without residue. The results of its combustion are water, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
