The original is not only an eccentric man who catches the eye of passers-by. This wonderful word has more meanings. What kind? We will analyze today, as well as synonyms and examples.
The meaning of the noun
The dictionary gives us only two positions:
- The same as the original. For example, there is a famous painting by Vincent Van Gogh “Sunflowers”. The reader has the good fortune to watch a copy here (see photo), and the original is in the National Gallery of London.
- About a man who stands out against the general background. For example, one who this May lives exclusively on the calendar, and not on the weather, and walks in shorts. Yes, if anyone in such weather decides to put on easier clothes, then he can safely be awarded the title of “original”. This is not discussed.
Of course, the original can be not only a picture, but also a manuscript. For example, at a time when computerization did not gain such frenzied momentum as it is now, typist labor was very much in demand. Believe it or not, some writers still do not part with their first typewriters, although a laptop is more convenient in this sense, but the typewriter makes you choose words more carefully, because you just can't erase them with the backspace button. Okay, we got distracted again.
Before moving on to synonyms, I would also like to share with the reader the meaning of the adjective “original”, because often in colloquial speech the adjective takes the place of the noun. But we are not far from the topic of books. The original is what concerns printed products directly.
Translation difficulties and more
The strong point of the adjective before the noun is that the former has more meanings. In order for the conversation to be substantive, we consider the content of the concept of “original”:
- What is not borrowed, not translated, is genuine. Example: “Original, non-adapted English text.”
- Independently, free from imitation of anyone. "Socrates is an original thinker whose influence can be traced to this day."
- Unusual, peculiar. "This lady has an original dress, apparently, complexes - a concept not close to her."
The reader may be surprised or indignant to ask: “But how do the nouns and adjectives relate to each other ?!” Instead of an answer, imagine the following dialog:
- Hello how are you?
- Yes, I want to read Vonnegut ...
- What exactly?
“The cradle for the cat.”
- In the original?
- Are you laughing? Vonnegut's language is too complicated. I need to start with children's tales and Peter Pan
- Well look.
It is easy to notice that here the meaning of the expanded formula is more suitable, for example: “Do you want to read an original, not a translated text?”, But for colloquial speech such a turn is too long and cumbersome, so people say “original” (this is a noun), but they think about the adjective, faith, in consciousness, they simply merge.
Synonyms for the noun
After all the meanings of the object of study are revealed, we can proceed to the words-replacements. Consider them:
- crank;
- folly;
- eccentric;
- exhibit;
- manuscript;
- picture;
- book;
- script.
Let the reader not be angry with us for taking specific objects as synonyms. Such a selection of words is necessary to show which particular objects may be hidden behind the term “original”. An “original” as a concept absorbs and accepts everything that is on the list between it and the definition of “eccentric”. This is the noun "original." A synonym for it is selected depending on the language situation.
Kant and King
Of course, as an example of the original man, one could talk about Kant, who strictly followed the schedule and went for a walk at exactly 6 pm. It was possible to check the clock on it. Perhaps the neighbors did so.
Or about a writer who wrote ironly before work 2-3 hours and after work as much and composed an unimaginable bunch of works. King talks about this in his autobiographical book, How to Write Books. The name of the original will not say anything to the Russian reader, so it will not overload its memory.
Poem S. Ya. Marshak and the modern context
However, all of them can be surpassed by a person scattered from Basseinaya Street. Perhaps the surprising thing is S. Ya. Marshak did not even suspect that after some 75 years (the work was published in 1930), people will emerge who in all seriousness will behave like an absent-minded person, only, unlike the hero of the poem , they don’t put on their heads not frying pans, but colanders. Moreover, believing that they are thus fighting with terrible force for freedom. It is difficult to say whether the other world exists or not, but if revolutionaries of all times and peoples are alive, then they again died of laughter, observing such “resistance”. By the way, it’s not even clear what these people are opposing. Yes, yes, we remember how it all began.
Our task now is to answer the question, in what sense the word “original” is used, and we vigorously and boldly carry it out. You can relate to eccentrics as you like, but one thing is clear: they do not let us get bored. Of course, it’s a little tiring when the rest of the world just does something to have fun, but maybe it’s a return from the century before, then people basically cried, now let them laugh heartily. And in order to somehow name what is happening around us, the concept of “original” will be very useful to us. We have already understood the meaning of the word.
