Today we’ll talk about what many lack, and people are well aware of this, but the strength of character is not enough to behave differently. The word “dignity” has entered our lens. But not only it, but also the linguistic dilemma: ““ Worthy ”or“ worthy ”- that is the question.” Of course, most people know the answer, but still it is necessary to make sure that it becomes public.
Origin
Typically, the origin of the word does not play an important role in its spelling, that is, it cannot help when memorizing, but here is a special case. According to sources, the word “dignity” came from a Slavic ancestor, currently known only to dialects, - “dignity”. The latter means “decency,” so you should not worry about the language, it retains its logic and perfectly remembers the roots, unlike people.
It would seem that there is no connection between this word and the object of our study, right? Not really. If you recall that many are tormented by the question of how to write - “worthy” or “worthy” - then, thinking about the definition of “worthy” that is strange for a modern ear, you can clearly understand: there can be no letter “e”, there always either “and” or “th”. So here, and they also say that history is a useless science. Not true! Very useful.
Value
Perhaps it was necessary to skip the meaning of the word forward? Perhaps, only, as a rule, they begin precisely with history, if it is in the study, in ours it is present.
Now the meaning of the adjective, since we figured out the spelling. The explanatory dictionary was sad without the warmth of human hands, but let it not be hoped for the holidays, because again we cannot do without it. Let’s open our favorite book and read in it the following meanings of the adjective “worthy”:
- Deserving of something. For example: "His action is worthy of respect."
- Fair, well-deserved. For example: “His assessment is a worthy reward for his work, because the composition turned out to be interesting, and he wrote it without a single mistake. Schoolchildren rarely encounter such literacy. ”
There is one caveat worth mentioning. “Deserved” and “fair” do not always fit as synonyms for the word “worthy”, but only in a certain context, for the concept of “dignity” is strongly associated in the human mind with positive characteristics.
But you can also earn punishment, and failure can also be completely fair and predictable if, for example, the student was not preparing for the exam. Therefore, when you think about how to write - “worthy” or “worthy”, do not forget about the subtleties of meanings.
Solely decent
Do not laugh, reader, at us. The name of the subtitle was chosen for a reason. Next, we should discuss the phrase, which in the language is saturated with ambiguity. This, of course, is about "great dignity." So, we immediately inform you that there will be no vulgarity (it is already enough in the world), we intend to discuss only the direct meaning of the phrase.
The noun “dignity” has two meanings:
- Positive quality. For example: "This store is full of merits."
- The combination of high moral qualities, as well as respect for these qualities in oneself. For example: "He will not do this, his self-esteem will not allow him."
In fact, in short, “dignity” in the second sense can be painlessly replaced with “self-esteem”.
Therefore, the phrase indicated above can mean both positive personality characteristics (kindness, honesty, justice, sensitivity to the problems of others), and simple self-esteem, which literally glows in a person’s behavior. Indeed, almost everyone with a certain baggage of life experience can say about the moral quality of a new acquaintance with whom life brought him together. Such an operation, as a rule, does not require much time.
Do not place a hyphen here
The point in this sense is not in illiteracy, but in the fact that in the Russian language there are rules governing the relationship of hyphens and adverbs. We will not list all of them, but will concentrate our attention on only one that reads: “Adverbs are written using a hyphen with a prefix“ by ”and ending with“ -th (s) ”,“ -s ”and“ -s ”” .
Examples:
- brotherly;
- in your opinion;
- lordly;
- Like a dog.
Now, one can rightfully answer the question of how to spell “worthily”, as follows: an adverbial prepositional case phrase is written without a hyphen, that is, as it is written with us. We will not analyze semantics in depth, but let’s say: even the formal sign of the hyphen (ending "-th (s)", "-ki" and "-y") is absent. Therefore, do not be afraid and write without any hyphen!
Books on Human Dignity
Finally, in order to consolidate the result and part with friends with the reader, we offer a list of books that will teach nobility. And of course, based on the content of the works, they are highly worthy of attention. Here is the list:
- L.N. Tolstoy "Anna Karenina" (1875-1877).
- Jane Austen “Pride and Prejudice” (or in the new translation “Pride and Pride”). The book was published in 1813.
- Stephen King “Hearts in Atlantis” (1999).
- Stephen King “Rita Hayworth and the Rescue from the Shawshank” (1982).
- Ray Bradbury “Dandelion Wine” (1957).
The first two positions are cast classics, but the rest of the books can be read with pleasure. Do not think bad, but usually the word "classic" when it comes to books, adolescents cause allergies. Of course, King and Bradbury are much simpler than Lev Nikolaevich, but this does not mean that reading American writers is a waste of time. Reading is useful in principle. Without this necessary skill, one cannot remember and close the question of how to write correctly “worthy” or “worthy”. We repeat once again: the last word is correct, but the first does not exist in nature.
