Reverence: Meaning of the Word and Origin

Does a person need idols? This is a difficult question. After all, one of the commandments says: "Do not make yourself an idol." It can be interpreted in a religious and secular manner: the first assumes that the idol will distract a person from worshiping God, and the second implies that the idol interferes with self-development. In any case, today we will consider whether it is worth reverence. The meaning of the word is not hidden from us, and we will certainly discover its meaning.

Origin

Someone believes that history helps to understand modern reality, others that there is not a word of truth in textbooks. Still others think that history is a dead layer of time that teaches nothing. Who is right? Unknown But one thing is clear: the etymological dictionary will help us to reveal the secret of the object of study. Fortunately, the meaning of the word “reverence” is recorded there.

The etymological dictionary states that the object of study is the Old Slavic tracing-paper from the Greek eulabeisthai, where eu is “good, good”, labeisthai is “respect”.

All this is beautiful, but it doesn’t explain much. It seems that if instead of “good” it was “strong”, then much would become clear. And in our case, nothing is yet clear, but we will try to turn to other dictionaries in order to somehow dispel the darkness.

Value

The child is delighted

The explanatory dictionary will not make the task easier for us either. And the reader will now understand why. So, the meaning of the word "reverence": "Relate with reverence to someone (or something)." Probably, in order to get to the truth, you have to consider the noun too. Awe is the deepest reverence. So, finally something starts to clear up. As if there was fog, but now it is gradually dissipating.

Synonyms for the noun

The child froze in admiration

Sometimes synonyms look like an ornament and an appendage, but not in this case. Because without them, it will be quite difficult for us to understand what reverence really is. So, we will choose the substitution specifically for the noun, because its meaning is key to clarify the meaning of the verb:

  • reverence;
  • worship;
  • worship
  • veneration;
  • piety;
  • deification;
  • trembling.

This is perhaps the rare case when the meaning of “reverence” was clarified precisely thanks to synonyms. Who does not know what reverence or worship is? Another “awe” is a good word.

And the answer to the question: “Is it worth reverence?” Will be short. Yes, if admiration for someone or something helps a person find himself. And no, if a person’s whole life is reduced to reverence, and over time, holy awe acts as an instrument of destruction of a person. As an example, we can recall some fans who were dying after their idols, because their world was destroyed along with the death of an idol.
