What is a hostess? Debunking Myths About the Profession

More and more often on sites and in newspapers about work you can see ads for vacancies "hostesses". What kind of position is this and what is it like? In short, a hostess is an employee of a restaurant or cafe who greets visitors — the “owner of the hall” and the “face” of the establishment. Most often girls act in this position. They are the first to meet guests, accompany them to a table, help to understand the menu and choose an order, etc. In other words, they play the role of welcoming hostesses and do everything to make visitors feel most comfortable.

Very many people do not fully understand what a hostess is, and often believe that this work is somehow mysteriously connected with prostitution. But this is a completely misconception. If the institution is solid and respected, then there is no question of any "clandestine" messes. All that is required of a girl is to look great, smile, be friendly and sociable. Of course, in addition, she should be well versed in the menu and the wine list, be aware of all the actions that the restaurant holds, skillfully manage the waiters and even security, control the order in the hall. It is also desirable to know at least one foreign language, because in restaurants or nightclubs that can afford to keep professional hostesses on staff, a foreigner is often found.

Also, the work of hostesses is often confused with consummation. What's the Difference? At least in the fact that consumers communicate with a particular guest and get a percentage of the drink ordered for her. In addition, the “cons” are mainly dancers of clubs. The hostess does not do this. And even if one of the guests treats her with a drink, she will not receive a percentage from this. Yes, and in most decent establishments of this category of employees to drink alcohol is prohibited. After all, what is a hostess? This is actually an administrator who has to be in time everywhere and to control everything. When intoxicated, this will not be easy. In fact, hostess is a fairly responsible position. It depends on how you will meet the guest and how he will be served, whether this person will become a regular visitor to this institution or not.

What is a hostess in a hotel? Almost the same as in the restaurant and in the night club. The only difference is that the hotel "hostess", having met the guests, distributes them according to numbers, competently organizes the service. It is she who first comes to the rescue if the guests have any difficulties or misunderstandings. If necessary, she makes an emergency reservation for guests, makes arrangements with tour guides, and makes a taxi reservation. If the hotel has a restaurant, here the hostess monitors the access system of those guests whose meals have already been paid.

But not only on earth there is such a profession. What is a hostess on board an airplane? In fact, this is the same stewardess, but even more professional than the “standard” flight attendant. In addition to delivering food and drinks and explaining the rules of behavior on board, the “hostess” of the liner should be able to provide first aid, monitor the order in the cabin, know foreign languages, reassure passengers in emergency situations, and be able to supervise staff work skillfully.

On the one hand, it seems that the work of hostesses is not so complicated. It would seem that it could be easier than looking wonderful every day, communicating with people and getting paid for it? But any coin has a downside. Well, if the working day passes without excesses, but the human factor has not yet been canceled. If you are not stress-resistant, do not know how to “resolve” conflict situations in a peaceful way, you can be sure: in a month or two (or even earlier), a nervous breakdown will be provided to you. If such “little things” do not scare you at all, then welcome to the new profession.
