Subordination methods

A subordinate link is a link that exists between two or more syntactically unequal words in a sentence or phrase, in the case when one of them is considered main, and, accordingly, the other is dependent. The subordinate connection in the sentence exists between the main and subordinate clauses. This article will focus on the phrase and the main methods of subordinate communication.

A phrase is a logical combination of two or more words that are related grammatically and in meaning. It is known that the phrase serves to more clearly describe objects and their signs, as well as the actions that they perform.

In phrases, the dependent word is associated with the main word in several ways. So, the methods of subordinate communication include:

1) approval;

2) management;

3) adjacency.

This classification of methods is based on what part of speech expresses the dependent word in the phrase. Consider each of the above methods in more detail.

Subordinate communication methods: coordination

Coordination is the type of connection when the dependent word is coordinated with the main one and likened to this word in form, that is, it is put in the same number, gender and case as the main word, and changes when it changes. For example: What a wonderful day! The main goal of our meeting is to discuss the important issue of appointing a new director.

Phrases with this method of communication can be very easily found in the text, if you do not forget that the dependent word can be the variable part of speech (adjective; possessive, relative, indicative, definitive, negative pronoun; full participle; ordinal numeral; noun) , which is consistent with the main word in the category of number or case. The gender does not change for nouns, therefore this attribute cannot affect the coordination in such phrases as mother-teacher, new home, and others.

From the adjectives and participles that participate in the coordination, it is necessary to distinguish the substantiated words that form the management.

Subordinate communication methods: management

Management is a type of subordinate connection in which the dependent word is placed in the case that is determined by the lexical and grammatical meanings of the main word. In this case, the dependent word, as a rule, is a noun or any other part of speech that performs its functions. The main words are a verb, a noun, an adjective, quantitative numerals in the accusative or nominative case, an adverb or a word in the category of state.

So, when managing, the dependent word answers the question of indirect cases, for example: remember history - remember (what?), Protect a person - protect (whom?) And so on. It is important to remember that the pretext will always be a sign of management.

Subordinate communication methods: adjacency

Adjacency is the third type of subordinate connection in which the word dependence is expressed lexically, intonation and word order. Only invariable parts of speech, such as the infinitive, adverb, the comparative degree of the adjective, participle, possessive pronoun can adjoin. It is these words that will indicate adjacency. In principle, the word "adjacency" speaks for itself: the dependent word adjoins, that is, it explains the main thing.

In such a phrase, the main word can be the verb (clearly understand), the noun (Turkish coffee), the adjective (very understandable), the adverb, the participle (slightly tilted).

The connection in phrases with the infinitive is also regarded as adjacency. For example, please write down, I want to see, and the like.

And, finally, a small "cheat sheet", which will help to quickly identify the method of subordinate communication:

- upon approval, there are three requirements of the main word for the dependent - number, gender, case;

- when managing from the main word, there is one requirement - case;

- When adjoining, the main word cannot demand anything.
