A laptop. Battery calibration How it's done

The biggest plus of laptops is their mobility. You can work for them anywhere. And all this thanks to a conventional battery. And here the question arises. How to increase battery life? The calibration of the laptop battery will help you.

In order to learn how to calibrate a laptop battery, it would not hurt to find out what it generally consists of. The battery consists of only two parts: a control unit and a system of elements that accumulates an electric charge. It is the controller that is responsible for controlling the charging of your battery. If it breaks, you lose the entire battery.

The controller removes and sends the operating system information about the battery level, or rather, "says" how long the computer is able to work without recharging. Everything seems to be debugged, so why do I need a laptop battery calibration? Let's consider the following situation.

You work quietly on the computer while your battery charge is 50%. Well, everything seems to be normal. But, as a rule, the computer system is happy with such a surprise. The actual battery charge is 50%, but the controller and computer notify you that the battery charge is only 20%. And this is what could happen next. You work further and spend another 10% of energy. The real battery charge is now 40% (!), And the controller in alarm reports that you have only 10% left until the battery is completely discharged. As a result, the process of shutting down the computer starts. What do we end up with? All data was neatly stored, since it did not come to a “hot” shutdown of the laptop, but those remaining 40% of the energy would have given at least another hour of battery life. This is one example that forces the user to enter the words “laptop, battery calibration” into the search engine.

An uncalibrated battery has a number of significant disadvantages:

  • Significantly reduced battery life
  • The battery life is extremely short

There are many ways to calibrate. There is a huge variety of programs, but why look for something when your computer already has everything you need. Almost every laptop has a utility for calibrating the battery already in the BIOS.

We can proceed. No matter which laptop you have , battery calibration starts with a 100% full battery charge. You should also remove the “checkmarks” in such system setup items as: resolution of sleep mode, disabling the hard drive and screen. Now completely (!) Discharge the battery. The procedure is mandatory, it should not be overlooked. An uncalibrated battery can be distinguished by one characteristic feature. It allows the computer to work for a long time even at a charge of 0.1%. Now we have a “zero” charge. Note! If you store the battery in a completely discharged state for a long time, the battery will "die". That is why, as soon as possible, connect the laptop to the charger. After a full charge, calibration is complete. Please note that without periodic calibration of the battery, its normal operation is impossible. The process is simple, but quite important. If you bought a new laptop, the battery calibration should be done at least twice. Believe me, you can work much longer.

Now you know how to calibrate your laptop battery. I’ll clarify some important facts about batteries that may be useful to you:

  • Do not leave them in a discharged state for a long time
  • The full recharge cycle must be performed at least once a month
  • Do not believe the advertisement! Working hours of almost all batteries: no more than 3 hours (10 or more hours - no more than an advertising move)
  • Depending on how your laptop is running, calibrating the battery may give different results. And by no means negative!
