Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant OJSC is one of the largest defense sector enterprises in the country. The company became famous for the design and manufacture of artillery systems. Today, NMZ produces sophisticated military-technical products, as well as reactors and components for nuclear power plants, including ships with a nuclear power plant.
Base
Even before the revolution, the large machine-building plant of the Nizhny Novgorod Region "Krasnoe Sormovo" hatched plans to transfer part of the bulk production (primarily metallurgical) to another site. Only with the advent of Soviet power did the practical implementation of this project begin. In 1921, the start of survey work and the design of future workshops was given. However, the plans were changed in favor of creating a defense enterprise instead of a metallurgical site.
Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Plant (NMZ) was founded in 1932 as a site for the mass production of artillery systems. The first products were 76 mm DRP-4 guns. They were released in unfinished, poorly equipped workshops, but Nizhny Novgorod coped with the task. In 1938, factory designers, led by an outstanding engineer V.G. Grabin, presented the government with an F-22 cannon and a modified version of the F-22 USV. Commission headed personally by I.V. Stalin, decided as soon as possible to establish a large-scale production of guns. Before the war, more than 2500 units were manufactured.
Development
In 1939, the efforts of Grabin and the administration at the Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant for the first time introduced a unique model of narrow specialization of workshops, which made it possible to carry out mass assembly of tools in large quantities without compromising quality. Thanks to revolutionary methods of organizing production, the enterprise remained the best artillery system manufacturer in the industry.
After the Second World War, the plant mastered the production of the latest special equipment, equipment for nuclear power plants, steam generating units for the nuclear fleet, manufacturing products, and consumer goods. The team was awarded 5 highest orders of the USSR.
As a joint stock company, NMZ has existed since July 1, 1992. And on April 23, 2002, the plant became part of the Almaz-Antey concern. 08/20/2009 the company is included in the list of strategic companies.
Specialization
The main activity of the Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Plant is the design, manufacture, modernization and operational support of radar systems and air defense, artillery weapons, reactor and auxiliary equipment for the country's fleet and nuclear energy, including military purposes.
In addition, NMZ is engaged in the production of:
- equipment for morphlot;
- ANNU (steam generating nuclear installations);
- mining equipment and electrical equipment in explosion-proof execution;
- heating plants;
- equipment for the needs of agriculture, forestry and oil industry;
- machine and hoisting equipment;
- consumer goods.
- metallurgical products;
- installation, commissioning and repair of heat power, electric power equipment, power facilities.
The manufactured products are sold in three main market segments:
- military products (PVN);
- products for nuclear power plants and ship industry;
- civilian products.
The most important area of the product range for military hardware is the long-term participation of the Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Plant in the international market of special equipment, mainly associated with the implementation of air defense systems and artillery systems. Since 2012, there has been an increase in production volumes for nuclear power plants and the ship industry, which amounted to about 17% of the total output. The volume of production of civilian products has also significantly increased, the specific gravity of which reaches 15%.
State defense order
In the framework of the state defense order of OJSC Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant, in recent years, products of the following nomenclature have been manufactured:
- complex "Sky";
- complex "Volga";
- two types of chassis equipped for the promising Vityaz complex;
- antenna posts of the S-400 complex;
- the enterprise together with the Federal Research and Production Center NNIIRT (Nizhny Novgorod) manufactured and supplied Niobium products.
Nizhny Novgorod Machine-Building Plant, in collaboration with OKBM Afrikantov, produces steam generating units of various designs. Together with the head office of GSKB Almaz Antey, it is modernizing existing S-400 air defense systems. Today, a large-scale project for the construction of the second production line is underway at NMZ. After the implementation of the plan, the plant’s capacity will increase at least twice.
