What is virgin soil?
This is a land cover with dense vegetation that almost never plowed mechanically or manually. In its root-inhabited soil layer, virgin soil contains a large amount of nitrogen, humus and other plant nutrients. These plots of land are very compacted and resilient. In arid places they are the driest, in rainy places they are maximally moistened. It is difficult to break through the virgin seeds of weeds, here the activity of reproduction of microorganisms is reduced.
Classification of virgin soil types
- The steppe is collected on chestnut soils and chernozems (Askania-Nova nature reserve in the Kherson region, Kamennaya Steppe in the Voronezh region).
- The semi-desert is characterized by gray soils, brown desert or light chestnut soils (Zauralie, Siberia, Kazakhstan).
- Floodplain is widespread in the non-black soil. To master its lands, it is necessary to pre- drain the soil using special equipment (Far East, Siberia, Transcaucasia).

The well-known expression "Plowed field" means precisely virgin soil, which is difficult to plow. “Plowing and plowing at you” - this statement also explains that there is a lot of work to be done, and the phrase itself is associated with hard work on the virgin lands. "Plowing the field - not a pond to cross" is another expression that shows how difficult it is to put the land in order. The phrase can also be attributed to the virgin soil.
