Kovzhskoye Lake (Vologda Oblast) is located in Vytegorsky District. It has another name - Loz. The length of this body of water is 18 kilometers and a width of 4 km. The surface of the water surface is 65 km2. The lake is one of the water bodies of the lake system, which includes much larger bodies of water. In the north, it passes into Kuzhozero, and in the south by a channel connected to Pavshinsky Lake.
Geography of the lake
The catchment area is 438 km 2 . The lake is located at a moderate height above sea level - 162.3 meters.
From the southwestern part, which has a separate name - Lozovsky Lake, the Kovzha River originates. Near the lake is the village of Loza. There are other villages on the shore: Riumino, Yashkino, Kiabelovo. Near the pond the P5 highway is laid. In winter, the lake is covered with ice.
Reservoir lake
Although this body of water looks like a natural object, it can also be considered as a reservoir, since the runoff is blocked by a dam, which is located on the Kovzha River emerging from it.
The water body is part of the Volga-Baltic waterway. The origin of the name is associated with the name of the Kovzha River, which in Vepsian language means “birch”.
Nature of the lake
The lake is surrounded by deciduous, coniferous-deciduous and coniferous forests. The shores are often low, with gentle slopes. Silt deposits prevail at the bottom. Various types of fish are found in the reservoir: perch, roach, carp, pike, bream, crucian carp, pike perch, vendace, burbot, ruff, and ide. The maximum level of fishing was observed in the 30s of the twentieth century. And in 1988, young Cuban nelma was released into the water.
This is a favorite place for fishermen. Fishing on Lake Kovzhsky takes place all year round. Due to its good ecology and picturesque surroundings, the pond is suitable for a relaxing outdoor recreation. Leaving trash here is not accepted.
Features of the reservoir
Kovzhskoye Lake is located in the north-west of the Vologda Oblast, in the Vytegorsky District. It belongs to the basin of the Caspian Sea, although it is very far from it. The depth is on average 5.9 meters, and the maximum reaches 16 meters. As for the Kovzh reservoir, the average depth there is less - 3.5 meters, and the maximum reaches 20 meters.
Water in the lake comes from several small rivers and streams. The amount of incoming water is small. Kovzhskoe lake-reservoir has a complex shape, and also has separate reservoirs. Water level fluctuations are negligible and are regulated by man. Mineralization of water is small and amounts to 50-100 mg / liter. Water has a neutral level of acidity and is saturated with oxygen molecules. Organic content is increased, and visibility under water is about two meters.
The highest part of the coast is the south. It is dominated by hilly terrain with heights of up to 35 meters. In other areas, the coast is low, slightly hilly. The coastline is winding, and the entrance to the water is gentle. The shores are piled with stones, sand, and sometimes swampy. In the coastal zone, the bottom is sandy and rocky, and deeper than two meters - silty, hollow with pits, silted.
The most interesting objects at the bottom are ferromanganese nodules located at a maximum depth (16 m), having the appearance of peas or beans, as well as powdery ore near the northwest coast.
There is not much vegetation in the lake. It is represented by reeds, chytin, reeds, horsetail, Elodea, water lilies, cattail, sedges and other types of plants. Blue-green algae live in the water itself. Because of them, flowering of the reservoir is observed every year. In addition to them, here you can find green, golden, euglena and cryptophytic algae.
Zooplankton is present in water in a small amount. Basically, they are crustaceans - cladocera (cladocerans) and cyclops. In the bottom substrate, mollusks, small-worm worms, mosquito bells, nematodes, etc.
Near the lake, sites of ancient people of the Neolithic and Bronze Age were discovered.
