It is the administrative center of the eponymous urban district. 15 km south is Moscow. The city station is located on the Moscow-Savelovo direction. Sheremetyevo Airport is located nearby, where many city residents work.

In 1902, the Lobnya station of the Savelovskaya railway was built near the Lobnenka river, around which a substation village began to develop, which was named in 1911 the suburban area of ​​Lobnya. The next year, the demonstration farm of the Petrovsky Agricultural Academy began to develop. The first data on the population of Lobny dates back to 1926, when 300 inhabitants lived here.

During World War II, heavy battles were fought in the city area. In 1959, the population of Lobny reached 12,249 people, which is associated with the development of industry in the city. By 1967, the number of inhabitants had almost doubled, amounting to 24,000. In December 1961, the status of a city was assigned. In 1976, the village of Lugovoi was annexed to the city. In the first year of the post-Soviet period, the population of Lobny was 61,000. Since 2002, the population has been constantly growing. In 2018, 88,220 people live in the city.
