MeMZ 245 engine: technical specifications, description

MEMZ 245 is a four-cylinder internal combustion engine with water cooling, which was produced at the Melitopol Motor Plant. The motor is designed for compact Ukrainian cars "Tavria" and "Slavuta". The power unit has good technical characteristics, and is also easy to repair and maintain.

History of creation

The first research and development work began back in 1975 and ended in 1979. Acceptance tests the MEMZ 245 engine as part of ZAZ-1102 passed in 1982, according to the results it was recommended for serial production. But mass production did not begin immediately.

Assembly of MeMZ engines at the Melitopol plant

Mass production of power units began in 1988. The power of this motor was 51 liters. from. In 1991, specifically for the cargo-passenger car LuAZ-13602 Volyn, a modification of MEMZ 24520 was developed.

In the entire history of production, the engine received a significant number of modifications and improvements. This was done to improve the engine, and also adapted to certain parameters. Also, other engines, such as 307 and 317, were developed on the basis of the standard power unit.

According to the factory documentation, the motor resource is about 130,000 km. Under normal operation, as well as regulatory maintenance, it was possible to achieve 150-170 thousand kilometers. To achieve such results, it was necessary to reduce the maintenance interval by 20%.

Motor systems

Design features of the motor are quite simple. The power unit is very similar to VAZovsky 2108. The MeMZ 245 engine consists of such systems with the following elements:

  1. Power system - emulsion carburetor with the function of shutting off the fuel supply at forced idle.
  2. Gearbox - mechanical with two shafts and five gears forward and one back.
  3. Lubrication system - mixed with wet sump.
  4. The cooling system is liquid.
  5. Electrical equipment - battery, voltage - 12 V

All motors produced by the Melitopol plant are of the same type and have minor design differences. So, MeMZ 245 injector from MeMZ 307 differs only in volume and size of combustion chambers.

Service

Maintenance of the power unit is carried out characteristic and typical of the entire line. Due to the simplicity of the design, servicing the MEMZ 245 engine will not be difficult even for novice drivers, not to mention experienced auto mechanics. Therefore, we carry it out on our own. More details about each operation during each maintenance are described in the manual issued specifically for Tavria cars. It is worth noting that at each MOT, in addition to the indicated actions, it is necessary to replace the oil and oil filter.

Powertrain Repair

The most frequent repairs carried out with MEMZ 245 are oil changes, a timing belt and a water pump. At this stage, repairs are easy to do at home, but we rely on overhauls for professionals.

Overhaul will require some conditions and equipment. So, for boring a cylinder block, a boring and honing machine is needed. And for grinding the block head - a surface grinding machine.

Change of oil

Changing the lubricant in the engine is one of the most common operations carried out while servicing the vehicle. This is done in order to ensure maximum care for the motor and preserve its full life. The recommended service interval is 10,000 km, but it is recommended to reduce it to 8,000 km to increase the useful life. The operation takes no more than 30 minutes with the engine completely cooled and is carried out in the following order:

  1. Removing the battery terminal.
  2. Removing engine protection (if present).
  3. Unscrewing the oil drain plug.
  4. After draining the oil, remove the oil filter.
  5. Installing a new filter element.
  6. Replacing the sealing copper washer on the drain neck, tightening the latter.
  7. Filling with new oil through the filler neck. The required amount of oil should be between the Min and Max marks.
  8. Tightening the neck, starting the unit. Checking the lubricant. If it is not enough, add to the required level.

According to the technical documentation, 3.5 l of oil is placed in the engine.

Late Service: Implications

Untimely change of motor fluid leads to the gradual destruction of the main elements of the motor. So, due to an excessive amount of metallic impurities, the seals begin to break down, which leads to leakage and backlash of parts.

Also, the consequence may be that the motor loses a significant amount of its resource. Another negative factor will be excessive oil overheating, which the engine cooling system cannot cope with. The combination of all factors will lead to increased wear, and, accordingly, will bring capital repairs to the power plant closer.

Timing Belt Replacement

The timing belt is a part that requires timely care. This is due to the fact that when the element breaks , the valves will be bent, which will lead to a major overhaul of the block head. This can hit the owner’s wallet a lot.

Replacing timing belt MeMZ 245

The timing mechanism MEMZ 245 is pretty standard, but not everyone can replace the belt, thereby increasing the earnings of various car services. Consider how to replace the timing gear drive yourself:

  1. Removing the battery terminal.
  2. Removing the timing cover.
  3. Switching speed to 4, fixing the hand brake.
  4. Torsion of the wheel until the first piston becomes top dead center.
  5. Camshaft Pulley Lock.
  6. Loosening the tension roller, removing the belt.
  7. Removing tensioner.
  8. Assembling in the reverse order.

Pump replacement

A water pump is an element that is responsible for the circulation of coolant through engine systems. If the element fails, the liquid stops circulating, and accordingly, the power unit begins to overheat, which will lead to the most unpredictable consequences (for example, deformation or deflection of the block head).

When replacing a water pump, you must not forget that its pulley is connected to the timing belt, which means that its dismantling is inevitable. The steps in this operation are as follows:

  1. Removing the battery terminal.
  2. Removing the timing cover.
  3. Drain coolant.
  4. Removing the belt from the camshaft pulley and pump drive.
  5. Unscrewing three screws securing the water pump, dismantling the latter.
  6. Assemble in the reverse order.
  7. Starting the engine, adding coolant to the required level

Clearance adjustment

Checking and adjusting the gaps in the valve drive mechanism is desirable to be done at a service station. The purpose of this operation is to normalize the engine.

Repair of the head of the MeMZ block

With poor adjustment, the motor loses its efficiency and increases the likelihood of premature wear of its components. With reduced clearances, the valves and their seats will inevitably burn out. With increased, the engine power will decrease, shots will form in the muffler. Check and necessary adjustment should be carried out every 20 000-30 000 km of run. All information on the correct clearances can be found in the vehicle repair and maintenance manuals. Consider the sequence of actions when adjusting the gaps:

  1. Installing the piston of the first cylinder at TDC compression stroke. The TDC mark on the HF pulley must match the TDC mark on the casing, and the slider should be opposite the cover electrode, which has the number 1. In this position, the clearance of the exhaust valve of the third cylinder is also adjusted.
  2. Loosening the adjusting screw nut on the beam. Setting the required clearance by rotating the adjusting screw. In this case, it is necessary to move the corresponding probe.
  3. Tightening the nut and checking the clearance.
  4. Sequential rotation of HF 180 Β° and adjustment of the gaps in the sequence indicated in the table below.

It is worth emphasizing that on the MEMZ 245 engine, valve clearances should be: intake - 0.13-0.17, exhaust - 0.28-0.32.

MEMZ 245: revision. Option one

Modification of the motor is necessary to increase power characteristics. Since the power unit is of Ukrainian origin and is intended for vehicles manufactured in Ukraine, the car was hardly sold outside the country. And before modifying the engine, as practice shows, motorists reached themselves.

Of course, the design bureau of the Melitopol plant, like any other, does not welcome tuning their power plants, but motorists often lack power, for example, to drive up a mountain, this pushes them to increase the amount of horsepower under the hood of a vehicle.

Owners of MeMZ 245 powerplant tuning are usually done with their own hands, since the engine design is simple. The increase in power on the motor is achieved mainly due to the installation of parts of its more powerful modifications. Let's consider some of them:

  • Crankshaft. It is installed with MEMZ 2457 or 2477. An elbow under the connecting rod is located 4 mm further from the center of rotation of the crankshaft, and thanks to this, the engine has an additional 100 cu. cm.
  • Pistons. They are installed with MEMZ 2457 or 2477. On these models they have a shorter skirt and an offset hole for the finger.
  • Flywheel. A flywheel is installed from MEMZ 307 to MEMZ 245. This will allow you to slightly modify the motor. In this case, the completion of the engine MEMZ 245 under the injector will be less painful. It also reduces vibration.

Tuning Second option

There is also a tuning version in which the engine is lightened. Necessary actions in this case:

  1. Installation of lightweight pistons, low-seat valves, lighter connecting rods, and smaller HF
  2. Updating the cooling system by replacing the nozzles with silicone, installing a tuned version of the pump.
  3. Shortening the exhaust system by 5 cm, which will add an additional 12 liters. from.
  4. Bulkhead carburetor: new nozzles are machined or old ones are machined.
  5. Lightweight grip installation.
  6. Installing an air filter of zero resistance.
  7. Replacing the timing drive.

There is a cylinder head tuning. An increase in power is possible due to a decrease in hydraulic resistance. This is achieved by improving the profile of the cylinder head channels - removing rough tides, increasing the channel cross section. The option of installing bronze guides and finalizing valve profiles is possible, so that they more resemble the letter "T". The final step will be to increase the degree of compression by grinding the plane of the valves.

It is worthwhile to understand that the engine, after carrying out modifications, loses part of its resource. If you conduct the tuning correctly and pre-calculate everything, then it can lose very little. But if we finalize it without calculations, and besides, subsequently put significant overloads on the engine, then the life of such a motor will be 70-80 thousand km, not more.

Conclusion

The MEMZ 245 engine was created in order to compete well with similar engines that were installed on the VAZ-2108. Melitopol designers succeeded due to the good quality, ease of maintenance and repair, which can be carried out independently in your garage. This is achieved due to the simplicity of the design and the lack of complex electronics.
