Pushkin Park in Nizhny Novgorod: history and modernity

Nizhny Novgorod is a city with a long history, unique sights and urban landscape parks. In this city it is not necessary to walk with a guide, here you can’t get bored already.

A park

In the central part is the Pushkin Park of Nizhny Novgorod. This is a green area where you can slowly stroll and dream among the centennial birches.

The northern part of the park area is a historical monument, which is protected by regional legislation. Its border runs parallel to Belinsky Street and along the diagonal path leading from the television center. Here, on the territory of about 5 hectares, birches grow, whose age exceeds a century.

The status of the city park received only in 1990, and after that benches, cafes and fountains began to appear here.

Appearance story

After the monument to Pushkin appeared in Moscow in 1880, many cities of Russia picked up the idea, but took a different path. On the poet’s birthday, according to the Julian calendar, this is May 26th, trees and bushes were planted, meeting the arrival of spring.

In place of the modern Pushkin park in Nizhny Novgorod in 1881, city authorities allocated 11 acres to create a garden here. But the preparatory work took a lot of time, and only in 1907 the first trees were planted.

At that time, the territory allocated for the park was located on the outskirts of the city, therefore, it was repeatedly damaged here. These were not only unreliable citizens, but also goats. And in 1941, they even held exercises of the people's militia.

In 1912, 5 thousand acacia bushes and 321 birch trees, which at that time were already 5 years old, were already planted in the garden. During the Great Patriotic War, the park was also damaged, but after the war it was rebuilt by planting new trees. An arboretum was organized in the southern part of the park area.

In the postwar years, Pushkin Park in Nizhny Novgorod occupied a maximum area of 14 hectares. From 1958 to 1990, the territory was reduced to 9.8 hectares. So, in 1958, the territory was partially given over to the construction of a local television center, and in 1963 a cinema and a building were built in the middle of the garden, which housed the society of fishers and hunters. And since the 1980s, part of the territory was given for the construction of student dormitories and tennis courts. In the 90s, shops and fountains appeared here and carried out landscaping.

Modernity

From the old Pushkin park in Nizhny Novgorod there was only a diagonal alley and 5 hectares with trees.

In 2001, part of the territory was leased to the company that placed the rides here, but in 2009 the contract was terminated and all entertainment equipment was dismantled.

In 2006, local authorities decided to erect an opera house in the park on the site of the former House of Hunters, where the restaurant is now located. But to this day, the question remains open, the construction project is constantly being returned for revision. In addition, the public is also excited, because at least 200 or even 400 trees will have to be destroyed. But cutting down trees in such territories is prohibited by law. Therefore, in 2008, local authorities changed the boundaries of the park, and as a result, the existing restaurant was outside the garden. What will happen next - time will tell.
