The tasks of environmental management include planning the environmental activities of the enterprise and the proper organization of environmental activities, both external and internal. In addition, the functions of environmental management are the justification of a specific environmental policy of the enterprise and the assessment of the results of its environmental activities. The development of an enterprise environmental management system is based on managing the environmental impact of the enterprise and the efficient use of resources. In addition, the functions and tasks of environmental management include personnel management and improvement of environmental management systems and management.

Environmental management at the enterprise in a broad sense means managing the impact of economic, social, informational, administrative, technological factors on the environment in order to achieve sustainable development of nature and society as a whole.

The environmental management system at the enterprise should be simultaneously aimed at managing and efficiently using natural resources, and, on the other hand, should be focused on the analysis of the impact on humans and the social and demographic processes of natural and artificial objects.

Environmental management at the enterprise at the regional and interregional level should ensure safety at high-risk facilities, such as chemical plants, oil and gas pipelines, nuclear power plants, energy production, air transport, and railways. The tasks of environmental management also include combating pollution of soil, air and water, increasing the efficiency of water use , reproduction of forest resources, reducing land disturbance, rational use of mineral resources, solving the problem of additional energy sources, creating energy-saving technologies and environmentally friendly materials, protecting rare species animals and plants, the development of national parks, ensuring radiation safety, land reclamation , etc.

At a single local level, environmental management at the enterprise is mainly aimed at monitoring strict compliance with natural laws, environmental quotas and standards. In addition, the environmental management tasks of a particular enterprise include analyzing the environmental consequences of production, ensuring the improvement of modern technologies in production in terms of reducing its accident rate, technological risk, energy intensity and material consumption, toxicity and the amount of waste and emissions.

In addition, environmental management is designed to optimize the operation of production facilities, whether they are agricultural, agricultural, energy, transport or technical enterprises in a given region (village, city). The tasks of environmental management also include greening production, which consists in the efficient use of waste from one enterprise as a resource for other industries.

The effectiveness of environmental management can be assessed by the level of optimization of district plans to reduce the harmful effects of production facilities on the population of a given region, as well as measures to timely rehabilitate the population from these effects.

Also, environmental management should introduce certain restrictions on the construction and operation of potentially hazardous industries that can have a negative impact on the nature and state of public health.
