Installing programs from Ubuntu repositories

Every person who uses a computer has to download various applications. In most cases, installing programs is a very simple process that runs automatically.

Many users mistakenly believe that not all available knowledge will be required to install applications on Ubuntu, and complex sets of commands will have to be entered manually.

Everything is completely different. Not even the most trained user can easily cope with this task, despite the fact that installing programs on Linux is fundamentally different from the same action on Windows. The easiest way for beginners is to download programs from the Ubuntu Application Center.

Install from repository in GUI

Ubuntu provides an Application Center that stores the tested paid and free programs and packages. Installing programs from the repository greatly facilitates the process and ensures the correct operation of applications.

Before installing, you need to start the repository by clicking on its icon, which can be found in the vertical panel on the left (when you hover over the icon, its name will appear - "Ubuntu Application Center").

On the main page of the repository on the left is a block of categories, in the center of the top of the page are new programs, at the bottom are applications that have received the highest ratings from users.

In the category block, various sections are presented: Internet, office, games, system, multimedia, etc. If you expand any of them, you can see all the programs included in it. Applications that are already installed on the computer are marked with green ticks.

To quickly find a program, its name must be entered in the search bar, which is located at the top left. Then enable the search and wait for the application icon to appear in the results window. After clicking on it, a field with two buttons "Details" and "Install" will appear. If you need to download the software, then click on the appropriate button, and the installation of programs will start automatically. Before downloading, you can see screenshots, read the description and reviews about the program, for which you need to click on the "Details" button.

Installation from repositories via terminal

Installing programs in Ubuntu from the repository through the terminal is a simple and quick process during which you can download several applications at the same time. To do this, you need to know only one simple command.

To call the terminal, you need to enter the "Main menu". This is the topmost icon in the sidebar on the left. Then open the “Standard” section and select “Terminal”.

A window opens in which you need to enter the command "sudo apt-get install" and the name of one or more applications listed with a space. The "sudo" command provides superuser rights, "apt-get" allows you to download software from repositories automatically, "install" gives the installation command. After pressing “Enter” you will need to enter your system password through which the user logs into Ubuntu. You should be aware that when entering a password, characters are not displayed (most likely, you will see tokens). After that, the installation of programs will begin. To remove more unnecessary components, you must enter the same command by changing the word "install" to "remove".

All downloaded applications can be found in the appropriate sections in the "Main Menu".
