This unusual creation is called cochineal (cactus pseudoscutis).
Females of the considered species gather in the period before laying eggs from prickly pear cacti using a blade or brush, dried and, ultimately, grind into bright red powder. The resulting mixture is treated with a solution of ammonia and sodium carbonate, and then filtered. The dye itself is carmine, the brightness of which varies depending on the acidity of the substance. So carmine red color - what is it? Usually it is orange, bright red and purple.
