Configure Windows Auto-Login

Automatic login, although it does not speed up the computer directly, still significantly reduces the time required to fully boot Windows. This is especially true if you are the sole owner of the PC and you do not need to constantly switch between multiple accounts.

True, to find and enable this feature is not so simple. The fact is that it was well hidden by Windows developers in order to increase the security of data stored on users' computers. But do not despair, as this article will help you cope with this difficult task.

The essence of automatic login

So, for starters, it's worth figuring out why this function is needed at all. In fact, everything is simple: automatic login to Windows allows you not to enter a password for authorization under your account. Simply put, it will be enough for you to turn on the computer to immediately get to the desktop and get to work.

It is easy to calculate that the time elapsing from pressing the power button on the system to the full start of Windows will be reduced by exactly as much as you spend on entering a password and entering your account. As you can see, solid benefits. Especially if you are not worried about the fact that someone will use the computer in your absence and steal some valuable data. Well, with the theory sorted out, now is the time to move on to practice.

Configuring Login Using the Account Editor

This method of setting up automatic login without a password is the most common. To apply it, do the following:

  1. Press Win + R to use the Run service.
  2. Type control userpasswords2 in the work line. Carefully check the spelling of all characters, and then click OK.
  3. The editor of the accounts stored on your computer will start. By default, the "Users" tab should be active in it. If this is not the case, switch to it yourself.
  4. Now select your account by hovering over it and left-clicking, and then uncheck the box “Require password entry”. Click "Apply."
  5. Next, you will see that the window with the automatic login settings has started. In it you will find the name of your account (in the "User" line), as well as empty lines, in each of which you need to enter a password.
Login setup

That's basically it. After you enter your password and confirm the changes, the system will no longer require your password and will immediately start from the desktop. By the way, the same method can be used to automatically log into Windows 10.

Through the registry

But this method is much more complicated than the previous one. It involves using the registry editor to configure automatic login. It is done like this:

  1. Press Win + R and write Regedit. Now you need to go to the HKL_MACHINE section.
  2. After that, open SOFTWARE.
  3. Next, go to Microsoft, and then go to Windows NT.
  4. Then in CurrentVersion and finally in Winlogon.
  5. Find the DefaultUserName parameter in the right. Open it and make sure that the name of the account for which you want to configure login without a password is entered here. Next, look for the DefaultUserPassword parameter (if there is no such file, you will have to create it yourself). Enter the password for your account here.
  6. Well, finally, find the line AutoAdminLogon. Open it and write the number 1 in the "Value" field.

Now just close the editor and restart your PC. If everything is done correctly, the operating system will boot without having to enter a password.

Password reset

Alternatively, you can not configure automatic login, but simply disable the password for your account. This is done as follows:

  1. Open the "Control Panel" and go to the "Accounts" section.
  2. Now select your account and click on "Change your password."
  3. Enter your current password in the corresponding field, and just leave the New Password and Confirm fields blank.
  4. Confirm the changes and restart the computer.
Password Disable

That's all. Now when you boot the operating system, you will no longer need to enter your data each time. Just remember that although this is very convenient, you can still leave an account without additional protection only if you are completely confident in the security of your computer. It is highly recommended that you do not turn off the password and configure automatic login to the system on a PC that is used by several people at once and on which important documents are stored.
