A football team from the Austrian city, whose name can be translated as Solegrad (since the largest salt mines in the country were located in the vicinity), appeared quite late on the large Austrian football arena, which, in general, is characteristic of Austrian football. For a very long time it was dominated by metropolitan Vienna with various “Vienes”, “Vinesportclubs”, “Austrias”, “Admiras” and “Rapids”. The rise of the Salzburg football club was a trend of the times.
Let there be "Austria"!
The predecessor of “Red Bull” - “Austria” - was born on September 13, 1933, when the two teams of Salzburg “Hertha” and “Rapid” decided to join forces. Unlike his most famous fellow countryman, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who composed excellent music at the age of 6, it turned out that the players of these efforts had to put in a lot and a long time to get into the major Austrian league. In 1950, the team disbanded from tension even for several months. Only in 1953, when naming the team “Austria” (Austria in Latin), it was necessary to clarify which one was meant - Vienna or Salzburg.
Pretty soon, the Salzburg football club outfitted his first footballer with the national team. They became Erich Probst.
At the top
The first chance to earn a championship title at Salzburg appeared in the 1970/71 season, but the Vienna “Wacker” came out on top because it scored just one more point. What is surprising, because the composition of the Salzburg football club has never been distinguished by stardom.
In 1974, “Solegraders” first played in the Austrian Cup final, but lost to the “namesakes” from Vienna.
The casino will help us!
For almost its entire history, the Salzburg Football Club has been true to its first name. In order to please sponsors and owners, “Austria” changed various prefixes from time to time, but the main word remained eternal.
In 1978, the club decided on a global change in this sense and abruptly became the "Casino".
The name change, though after 16 years, brought the club success. In 1994, “Casino” made it to the finals in the UEFA Cup, where they lost twice to Inter Milan (0: 1 and 0: 1). In the same year, "Casino" for the first time became the champion of Austria. And since then, the club from Salzburg, in essence, has not left the “elite” zone of the Austrian Bundesliga. The club is almost always winners. True, there was a gloomy season 1995/96, when Salzburg almost rolled into the Oberliga, but this was only an episode. In 1997, the name "Casino" was rejected. The returned historical name "Austria" again did not bring good luck. By the end of the 90s - beginning of the 2000s, there was a decline. By that time, like most Austrian clubs, the Salzburg football club had overtaken a financing crisis.
Under the Red Bull
“Austria” was lucky: the Red Bull concern, an energy drinks company, drew attention to the club, a giant not only in the food industry and in the sports empire being created. Sponsor who is versed in sports. Today, the Red Bull possesses Formula 1 stables - Red Bull Racing, Scuderia Toro Rosso, as well as football clubs - New York Red Bull, Red Bull (Leipzig) , "Red Bull" (Campinas, Brazil), "Red Bull" (Sogakol, Ghana), hockey clubs - "Red Bull" (Salzburg, Austria), "Red Bull" (Munich, Germany). The company is a sponsor of teams for auto and motorcycle and other various races. Spends the company and the world championships in exotic aerobatics and flights on improvised aircraft.
April 6, 2005 "Austria" was bought by "Red Bull" with giblets and was renamed you know how. Initially, the company announced that it rejects the club’s previous history from Salzburg. Say, a new club is being created. However, this caused a storm of public indignation. There were even attempts to create an alternative "Austria". The Austrian Football Federation has even banned the number 2005 on the new bull logo. After all, having acquired “Austria”, “Red Bull” and got a place in the Austrian Bundesliga, but if this is a new club, then please start with the lowest league.
The company had to give way to protests and prohibitions. However, the third color - violet - was all so removed from the traditional colors of the Austrian shape. We have already talked about replacing the logo. Salzburgers fear that this is not the end of the alterations. From the sporting point of view, “Under the Red Bull”, the club from Salzburg is now experiencing its best times in history. It would be better to play in European competitions. Unfortunately, invitations of only qualified coaches without stars with a stake on young, not very well-known football players at a high level do not justify themselves. This is Austria’s football Salzburg walks the “Red Bull”, but on a European scale it can only be called a “bull”.
