Sooner or later, each of us has to get or write someone a characteristic. This is a rather complicated matter, especially when you consider that the requirements for this document are considerable, and there are no regulatory requirements for it.
Nevertheless, there is a certain standard that helps to more accurately and correctly disclose the business qualities of an employee. Here's how to do it.
The service description is issued by the immediate superior. Your resume or signature on it can be put on it by a higher manager, that is, one whose signature can be certified by a seal.
At the very beginning of the document (information block) passport data, biographical information, education, position of the employee, the time of his stay in this position are indicated. If this is a service characteristic of a soldier, then, in addition to the position, the rank must be indicated. If there are several entities, the priority for this area of ββwork is first indicated. The military lists places of service, stay in "hot" spots and participation in hostilities.
The second block, which should contain the service characteristic - description
labor activity. It is important to highlight the
professional qualities of the employee. For example, for creative workers it is recommended to emphasize their individuality, for military personnel - diligence and reasonable initiative, for journalists - creativity, etc. It is good if it is noted (especially if the official description of the officer or middle manager is being written) the ability to listen to the opinions of subordinates, clearly follow the instructions of higher ones, as well as professional and personal qualities.
Further, the service description should familiarize with the attitude of the employee or soldier to social activities: participation in non-core ("after-school") activities of the organization, scientific, public, volunteer or other projects. You can note the nature of the relationship with colleagues, managers and subordinates.
Finally, the final part lists all the information that is important for the person to whom the service description is written. Information about awards, rewards, etc. is entered here.
It is important to note that, on the one hand, the characteristic should be reliable, but on the other, it should not be sharply negative. If an employee or soldier is not distinguished by special talents and zeal, if he did not break the law, it is better to balance negative information with positive information. For example: in communication is impulsive, but always restrains own emotions.
For officers, it is important to emphasize moral stamina, the ability to keep military secrets, as well as excellent physical fitness.

It is important to remember that the preparation of such a document implies working with the personal data of the employee, so his preparation should not violate the norms described in article 14 of the Labor Code. In particular, the characteristic should be provided upon written request and must be against receipt. The exception may be cases involving litigation or violations of the law.
