Microsoft in the eighth version of its Windows operating system decided to remove the system performance evaluation tool and a table that displayed points obtained by individual components of a personal computer. On Windows 10, this index is also missing. However, the functionality itself has not disappeared. Moreover, the rating scale has become more logical, changing its maximum value from eight to ten points. And despite the fact that there is no corresponding item in the system properties, you can find out the performance assessment both using regular OS tools and using third-party applications.
Performance Assessment in Windows 10
Many expected the release of a new operating system from Microsoft, because in addition to visual changes, a significant part of the code was redesigned, which, according to Redmond, assured an increase in the speed and responsiveness of the system. Complex technical solutions developed and implemented by the company's programmers had a good effect on the overall performance of the OS, and you can use the Windows 10 performance index as a means of verification, comparing it with similar indicators of previous versions of the operating system.
Learn the performance score using the command line
You can evaluate PC performance using regular means of the OS itself. To do this, you must run a special command in the CMD shell. The command line must be run as administrator. To do this, right-click on the "Start" icon and select the menu item "Command Prompt (Administrator)". In the console window that appears, you need to type winsat formal-restart clean and confirm the execution by pressing the Enter key, after which the performance evaluation in Windows 10 will start.
Interestingly, the execution of this command will completely erase the history of previously conducted checks and scoring will begin again. If you execute the winsat formal command without an additional key, then the previous data will be saved.
It is also important to know that when checking a mobile device, such as a laptop or tablet, you must connect it to a power source, otherwise it will not be possible to run diagnostics.
The system’s assessment of the device’s capabilities will take several minutes, depending on its power, after which you can close the command prompt window. The verification results are located in the Formal.Assessment.WinSAT.xml file located at: C: \ Windows \ Performance \ WinSAT \ DataStore, in the WinSPR section. The data in it are presented in the form of a table with the following values:
- SystemScore shows an overall performance rating based on the minimum of the values below.
- MemoryScore displays the test result of the device’s RAM.
- CpuScore is the score obtained by the central processor.
- raphicScore summarizes the graphics subsystem test when working with the interface, as well as video content.
- GamingScore shows the result of device performance in demanding graphics applications and games.
- DiskScore displays the hard drive performance rating.
This method of testing system performance does not require the installation of third-party software, and performance assessment in Windows 10 can be carried out in the absence of an Internet connection.
Determining a performance index using the Winaero WEI Tool
For those who do not want to mess with the command line, there is a special utility for counting and displaying system performance ratings - the Winaero WEI Tool. In addition to being free, the program is also portable, which allows you to use it without the need for installation. You just need to download it from the manufacturer’s website, unzip the downloaded archive and run the executable file. The program interface resembles that of Windows 7. Making an assessment, the utility uses the data of a standard tool for checking the performance index of the operating system.
Increase system performance
There are several factors that can improve Windows 10 performance. The main reason for reducing this indicator is the use of outdated or non-original device drivers. To update, go to the Device Manager and select the menu item "Update hardware configuration." Windows will try to find and install the most suitable and current drivers. The speed is also affected by the number of “live tiles” displayed in the Start menu. It is recommended to unpin all unused tiles from the initial screen using the corresponding context menu item for each of them. In the additional system performance parameters, you should disable all or some of the visual effects, because they consume video card and CPU resources. To increase system performance, you can also disable notifications and OS prompts. To do this, you need to start the “Settings” application and in the “System” sub-item, turn off the “Display Windows tips” item. It is also important to maintain the system safe and prevent all kinds of viruses from entering it.
Performance assessment in Windows 10 can be used as a tool to display the degree of responsiveness and speed of the device, its individual components and the operating system installed on it. And, despite the fact that the manufacturer has complicated access to this functionality, using it is not difficult.
