Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant OJSC is one of the domestic leaders in the production of observational, measuring, control, photometric, medical optical electronic and mechanical devices. The company is an important structural unit of the Schwabe holding.
History of creation
By the mid-30s, as a result of large-scale industrialization, many enterprises, research centers, laboratories that needed optical measuring instruments were created. Particularly lacking were flaw detectors and hardness meters of materials.
The government decided to build an advanced enterprise near Moscow capable of producing optical equipment. Thus, in 1935, the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant was founded. The foundation stone was laid on the 18th anniversary of the October Revolution in a festive atmosphere. Construction was to become one of the priorities in the second five-year plan. By April 1936, the production of microscopes for measuring the hardness of metals used in the Brinell presses was launched.
War time
No sooner had the production gained momentum than in the fall of 1941 the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant had to be evacuated away from the front line - to Tomsk. When the operational situation near Moscow returned to normal, the machines and equipment were returned to their native workshops.
According to statistics, during the war period ZOMZ manufactured 781,000 different products. Of them:
- 300,000 army binoculars;
- 130,000 artillery sights;
- 110,000 reconnaissance periscopes;
- 78,000 air sight.
Post-war development
Peaceful life has set new challenges for the plant. In each of the next five-year plans, more than 50 new products were developed and mastered. The leading products were (and are still):
- observation devices;
- special, general industrial products;
- Medical equipment;
- film projectors;
- famous photo lenses of the Jupiter, Mir, Tair, Orion series.
The Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant, whose photo is impressive in size, in 1981 became the basis for the creation of a specialized production association in partnership with the Salavat Optical and Mechanical Plant.
Over 82 years of history, ZOMZ has made a huge contribution to strengthening the country's defense and economic power. More than 1,100 factory workers were awarded government awards, including the title Hero of Socialist Labor awarded to A. I. Pakhomov. The Order of Lenin received 13 people, the Order of the October Revolution - 10 people, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor - 101 people. The plant itself in 1985 was awarded the Order of the October Revolution.

On the cutting edge of progress
Today, the plant intensively introduces modern information technologies, united by the ideology of a computer-integrated plant system (CISP). Using the CI CAD subsystem can significantly reduce the development time of tools and technologies and improve their quality. The director of the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant Andrei Rastorguev is making great efforts to automate and computerize production lines, modernize equipment, and introduce innovative solutions.
About 70% of components are produced at the factory facilities. Complex parts are manufactured on numerically controlled machines in the CIS subsystem ATK (ACYTP). The output is products that are popular in Russia and in the world. The list of exported goods includes binoculars, monoculars, sports and hunting sights, night vision devices, and analytical instruments.
Observational instruments
OJSC ZOMZ is one of the leading developers and manufacturers of a wide range of monitoring devices. Among them: monoculars, night binoculars, daytime and combined, multifunctional sights. These optical devices are made of light alloys. They are distinguished by the optimal combination of basic parameters and price. The electronic optics sector is involved in the creation of various products, contributes to the widespread use of optical methods of analysis and research, accurate measurements at a qualitatively new level in almost all areas of industry and science.
Medical equipment
After the war, the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Plant began the development and production of medical equipment. In a short time, production was established:
- eye perimeters;
- slit lamps;
- Ophthalmoscopes large and simple;
- exophthalmometers;
- electrophthalmoscopes.
In collaboration with physicians of the Institute of Eye Diseases, complex devices were designed: anomaloscopes of the ACP and AN-59 series (color vision determinants), an ophthalmometer, and an adaptometer. Since 1959, projection diopters and laser ophthalmocoagulators have been produced.
Photometric Instruments
In 1946-1950, technical documentation for visual photometric devices was developed: a universal photometer of the Pulfrich FM-58 type, an NFM nephelometer, and a Dubosko KOL-1 (KOL-1M) colorimeter. They serve to determine the optical properties (transmission, reflection, absorption) of materials and the concentration of a substance in solutions.
The production of these devices required the development of many new technological processes, the manufacture of high-precision scales and mechanisms, ditches for solutions and others. The manufacture of irreplaceable devices required the availability of photocells, which were not mass-produced in the USSR. The plant was able to organize its own production of selenium photocells and organize the assembly of photoelectric colorimeters of the FEK family (FEK-M, FEK-N-57) and their improved versions (FEK-56, FEK-56M, KFK, KFK-2, KFK-2MP). These photometric devices have been produced for many years, while the old models were replaced with new ones, which made it possible to effectively meet the needs of science and production.
