Statue of baby Jesus in the basilica of Rome
The Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli is located on the Capitol Hill in Rome, it is a magnificent Romanesque temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church was built on the foundation of an ancient pagan temple. An interesting legend is associated with its construction.
In the 1st century BC, the coming of the Savior awaits in Judea and in the Roman Empire. Emperor Octavian goes for a prediction to the Sibyl, which lived on the Capitoline Hills, on the way to her he had a vision of the Virgin with babies in her arms. He suddenly heard a voice that told him that the altar of the son of God should be built on this site.
Octavian complied with the instructions of the voice of Heaven, and an altar called Aracoeli, or "Altar of Heaven" was erected on Capitol Hill. In the 4th century, a small church was built on this site.
At the end of the 18th century, the basilica lost its church status and was turned into a stable. But even after such blasphemy, she retained a magnificent interior decoration and a unique aura.
The layout of the church is characteristic of basilicas, that is, divided by columns into three naves (an elongated room).
The temple’s most touching treasure is the wooden statue of the baby Jesus, which Italians call Bambino. It has healing properties. For several centuries, the statue was sent on a luxurious stretcher to terminally ill people, and many healings are credited to it. For their healing properties, people generously presented Bambino with valuable gifts. His dress is embroidered with precious stones and gold.
But in 1994, a genuine statue was stolen, and a copy is currently in the basilica.
On Christmas Eve, a baby Bambino is placed in the center of the Christmas composition. But he does not lie in the cradle, but stands in full growth. A magnificent crown flaunts on his head, and GHS - Jesus Christ the Savior is embroidered on a precious dress. Virgin Mary in white robes leans towards him with awe and tenderness. Joseph is behind the cradle. A cloud hangs over them, God the Father soars in the center and sends a blessing to Jesus. Angels are sitting on a cloud.
The splendid dome of the chapel crowns all the splendor of the composition.
