Until the last time, the tenth modification of Windows suited almost all users. At least the installation of updates in it could be disabled forever. Despite this, Microsoft took an unprecedented step by launching a new update installation mechanism, regardless of whether the user wants to or not. Naturally, at the end of the installation, a restart of the system always follows. And if it happens just at the moment when you are working with an important document? After a sudden reboot, the changes may not be saved! Let's see how to disable the automatic reboot of Windows 10 so that it does not start at the most inopportune moment for this. There are five ways to offer for use, among which, however, you will not find methods for completely deactivating the Update Center and all its related services, since at the moment such a function has been completely and completely blocked by the corporation.
How to disable automatic reboot of Windows 10: setting the period of activity for installing updates
Let's start with the least radical solution, which does not turn off automatic restart, but allows you to instruct the system so that at a certain time while you are working on your computer, updates are not downloaded or installed. To do this, call up the options menu using the Start button or a quick combination of Win + I, then go to the security and updates section.
The first in the list will be a menu regarding the settings of the Update Center. Click on the link to change the period of activity.
The system will prompt you to set the time interval when you usually use your terminal so that no actions related to updates are performed at this time.
Note: just in case, you can use the additional parameters and enable the display of notifications about the need to restart so that the reboot is not performed unexpectedly for you. You can also postpone the installation of updates, but at the maximum this period is no more than thirty-five days.
How to cancel automatic reboot of Windows 10 if updates have already loaded?
But what if the system has already downloaded the necessary updates and is going to install them? Disabling automatic restart of Windows 10 in the same section cannot be deactivated, but you can use the restart settings link.
In the settings window, simply indicate the day and time when the updates should be installed. In a sense, this is tantamount to a situation where you put off installing them.
Note: please note that if there are no downloaded packages, the link described above with all its settings in the "Update Center" section will be absent.
Setting the prohibition of restart in group policies
Now let's move on to more efficient methods and see how to turn off the automatic reboot of Windows 10 using the Group Policy Management section. This toolkit is called through the "Run" console by entering the gpedit.msc command (which corresponds to the full name of the executable file in the System32 directory).
Here you need to expand the computer configuration branch and, through administrative templates, go down the folder tree to the Windows component section where the "Update Center" directory is located.
On the right in the workspace there is a parameter that prohibits the automatic restart if users are working in the system. After invoking editing a parameter by double-clicking, it is necessary to set its value to the on state, and then save the installed options.
Registry Actions
Now itβs worth saying a few words about how to disable the automatic reboot of Windows 10, if you use the registry for this. Actions are similar to what you did in group policies, but they are performed using a different technique.
Call the editor from the Run menu with regedit, and in the HKLM branch, through the SOFTWARE and Policies subfolders, get to the WindowsUpdate directory. It has a subfolder AU, and in it on the right in the window there will be the treasured key NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers. If for some reason he is not there, such a record in the form of a 32-bit DWORD parameter will need to be created independently.
Double-click to edit the option, and set the value to unity.
Pay attention to two important nuances! Firstly, unlike group policies, when performing any actions with the registry, a restart is required without fail. Secondly, the values ββset in the registry are higher in priority than similar group policy options. In other words, if you change something in the registry, a similar parameter in policies will not be available for changes. But when installing options in policies, changing them in the registry will not work.
Tasks of the "Planner"
Finally, you can turn to the so-called "Task Scheduler", whose role in the system parameters is greatly underestimated by many users. In the Run console, enter the control schedtasks command, and after starting the applet, go to the Scheduler library. Next, go through the Microsoft and Windows directories to the UpdateOrchestrator section.
In the field of installed tasks in the central part of the working window, find the Reboot parameter and, through RMB, select the option to disable it. The installation of available updates will be carried out only in the case of a manual restart of a PC or laptop.
Note: if you want to simplify your task as much as possible, you can use a special program called Winaero Tweaker, where the option to turn off automatic restart can be found in the Behavior section.
