Security and reliable protection of information have worried people since the invention of writing. But if earlier it was necessary to take care of the reliable storage of paper documents, now everything is much more complicated. Thousands of pages of documents can be stored on a small flash drive, and contacts and work information are stored on a laptop disk. Mobility is very convenient, but it has one unpleasant effect: losing a mobile device is easy, and this is not always associated with forgetfulness or distraction. Crime, unfortunately, has not been canceled. And if the contents of personal laptops are unlikely to lead to a worldwide apocalypse, then at least a loss of time and nerves is guaranteed.
Tie your laptop
There is a convenient tool called Kensington Lock to prevent laptop theft. What is it and how to use it? The device is a small lock with a key to which a cord is made, made of high-strength materials. The end of the cord is a loop with which you can fix the cord around a strong and stationary object, such as a table leg, pipe or small table. The lock, in turn, is inserted into a special hole on the laptop - K-Slot. In addition to the key, there are combination locks that can be opened using a digital combination.
Of course, the Kensington lock will not protect against powerful bites, and the K-Slot slot is just a plastic hole on the case that can be torn out with meat. But from the robbers running past, grabbing everything that lies badly, and office thieves will protect quite reliably. There are laptop models with a reinforced K-Slot located on a special chassis or locks inserted into peripheral connectors (VGA, LPT).
There is no reception against BIG
Thanks to the high quality of the locks and cords made of especially durable materials, the Kensington lock has become almost the world standard for security. And suddenly it turns out that a regular BIG ballpoint pen opens it without problems! This became possible due to the coincidence of the diameters of its end and the keyhole.
The handle body is made of ductile plastic that allows you to capture the locking pins, and at the same time has sufficient strength to turn them. Everything turned out to be simple. Attached, tightly pressed, a neat turn - and the lock is opened easily and quickly.
Intrigued by this circumstance, security experts decided to check other protection devices, not just Kensington Castle. Is it a manufacturing defect or is everything very bad in the computer security industry? The test results were disappointing and showed that most computer locks with a key open easily and without any special tools. Therefore, when buying a lock, you should choose a model with a digital code.
The story was widely publicized and forced the company to modernize equipment and increase the strength and secrecy of the castle. But now all the companies producing the Kensington castle and its analogues began to honestly warn customers about the possible opening of the castle by professional kidnappers.
Additional protection
Kensingston Castle protects the item itself from theft, but not the information in it. Therefore, in case it does happen, we recommend installing special software to find the laptop and protect its contents. This can be a program of remote blocking and destruction of information or hidden photographing of a robber and sending photos to the necessary E-mail.
