Valery Kuzmich was born on August 7, 1943 in Slavgorod of the Altai Territory. He spent his early childhood in the village of Sodokombinat near Slavgorod. Then the family moved to the small Turkmen city of Kizyl-Arvat.
Since childhood, Valery really liked basketball. He left the team only at age 16, because the coach left Kizyl-Arvat. Then a well-trained athlete tried to play football. Things went well.
At seventeen, he ended up in the Turkmen Republican team. Later he played in the team of the Institute of Physical Culture of the city of Ashgabat. In connection with the draft in the army, he joined the Uzbek club of the regional level Spartak Samarkand.
After demobilization I received an offer from the Ashgabat club "Builder". But there were problems with the kidneys. Very early, only 25 years old, had to end his career as a football player.
The rapid start of a coaching career
Children, graduates of the football school, were included in the team of masters of Kolkhozchi. Nepomnyaschi took a coach to this club. After a short time, Valery became the head coach of the republic’s strongest team at that time.
Then there was a break in the coaching career in connection with studies at the Turkmen State University, which Valery successfully graduated in 1969.
In 1984, at refresher courses in the capital of the USSR, he received an offer to work as a trainer abroad. He agreed. Then bureaucratic obstacles began. He was offered one country, then another, then a third. But no one made a business trip. When, finally, they offered to go to Cameroon, Valery agreed immediately and went to a distant African country.
Cameroon Miracle
In Cameroon, Valery had to train a youth team. He did not speak French. It was supposed to work with a translator.
At the time Nepomnyashchi arrived in Cameroon, the head coach of the national team, Claude Leroy, went home to France. He ended the contract, which was not further extended. Soon, qualifying rounds for the World Cup in Italy were to take place.
Valery Kuzmich was entrusted to prepare the team for an important competition after she played in a draw with the not very strong Angola team. Kuzmich began his work as a coach of the Cameroon team by selecting players for the team and establishing its core. Having found a common language with the players, he also established relations with the country's leadership. The results were not long in coming. Matches were won with Gabon and the Tunisian national team. The team received a well-deserved ticket to the championship in Italy.
Shortly before leaving for the mundial, Valery Kuzmich put his team to the local African continental tournament. I wanted to check the readiness of the athletes, but did not aim them at victory. The team lost at the very beginning and dropped out of the further struggle. Nepomnyaschi remained in the position of coach only thanks to the intercession of the first person of the country.
Further, Valery Kuzmich made the last composition changes, which turned out to be extremely successful. He recruited 38-year-old Albert Roger Moss Mill. And he replaced the goalkeeper, configured to lose the team. In addition, he fired two good players for violating the sports regime. However, then he forgave one.
In the first match, the national team of Cameroon beat the Argentines, among whom was Diego Maradona. This caused an unprecedented sensation and interest in Cameroon.
Valery Nepomnyashchy became the first coach who was able to bring the team from Africa to the quarter finals. The team of Cameroon lost in this championship only to the USSR national team and the British. The defeat in the game with the Union then for Cameroon did not matter. And the Cameroonians could win against the British. After the first goals, it was necessary to start a very cautious game, but the athletes opened up, and this was the reason for the failure.
At home, the team was met as national heroes, and the coach did not receive a dime beyond the contractual one. Valery Nepomnyashchy was not officially appointed as a coach.
