Scraper conveyors are widespread in the coal industry. They can move the load along the stationary trough using scrapers that are connected by a movable chain. These conveyors are used to transport pulverized, granular and lumpy goods.
Types of Scraper Conveyors
There are two types of scraper conveyors, which differ from each other in their design and the principle of movement of the cargo.
Type 1 - conveyors with very high scrapers;
Type 2 - conveyors having submerged scrapers (the load moves with a continuous mass).
The scraper conveyor is used to transport goods that are not subject to crumbling, that is, their quality does not decrease for this reason. With the help of these conveyors, it is possible to move the load with low strength of the pieces, because if they are strong, they can begin to jam, falling between the chute and the scraper.
Scraper conveyor with large scrapers
The gutters of the scraper conveyor with large scrapers are made of steel with a thickness of 3-8 millimeters. To increase the service life of the scraper conveyor, one strip of wear-resistant material is soldered to the lower scraper edge (high-manganese steel can act). Plastic scrapers are also used. The length of the individual elements is determined depending on the angle of repose, chain pitch, sizes of pieces of cargo, as well as height. The length of the scrapers that we have chosen should in the best way ensure that the space between the multiple pitch of the chain and the scrapers is filled. But remember that the length should be slightly larger than the largest piece size. The shape of the gutters can be very different.
A scraper conveyor with submerged scrapers should have much lower weight and dimensions for the same performance than a conveyor with large scrapers. These conveyors have a trench of two parts: one for idle, the second for the working branch. The load must fill absolutely the entire part of the gutter. Thus, when moving the chain, the load moves along the gutter.
Conveyors with scrapers immersed in a position to move the load along a vertical, inclined and even horizontal section of the track. Therefore, they are intended for the movement of small-sized, granular, dust-like, as well as free-flowing goods. Scraper conveyors can easily and without overload lift cargo up to a height of 20 meters, move it up to a distance of 100 meters, and increase productivity up to 700 t / h.

Among all the advantages, special importance can be given to the excellent filling of the cross section of the gutter and the possibility of moving the goods without overload on rather difficult routes and corners.
Disadvantages of conveyors
The disadvantages of the scraper conveyor are fewer than the advantages, but, nevertheless, they are. Gutters and scrapers wear out intensively on conveyors, and they also consume a lot of energy. You should also pay attention to the fact that this device is difficult to transport sticky, wet and abrasive loads, since they tend to stay between the gutters and scrapers.
