The Spanish Super Cup is a fairly young tournament. Especially in comparison with many other football competitions of the Old World, which have a very respectable age. In the current format, the Spanish Super Cup has existed for three decades, or rather, since 1982, when the Real Sociedad from San Sebastian and Real Madrid came together in a two-match confrontation. Then it all ended with a major victory, “Churi-urdin” with a total score of 5: 0. Modern "Real Sociedad" can only dream of such an achievement.
Since then, the Spanish Super Cup has been held on a regular basis. With the exception of the seasons 1985/1986 and 1986/1987, when the participants in the confrontation could not agree on the dates of the meetings. And the tournament was simply canceled. The winner of this trophy is determined in a two-match confrontation by the champion of the country and the winner of the cup final. They play one match on the field of each of the rivals. In case of equality of goals scored, the victory in the European Cup system is awarded to the team that scored the most goals on the road.
If any club made a “golden double”, that is, in one season they won the championship (Example) and won the cup, then the final winner is the King’s Cup final. True, in the first two such cases, the Spanish Super Cup was not played at all. In 1984 and 1989, the trophy went without a fight to the author of the “golden double” - “Athletics” from Bilbao and Madrid “Real”, respectively.
Over the past years, the statistics of the draw of this trophy are quite trivial, especially for those who are aware of the realities of Spanish football. Ten times the super bowl was won by the divine and incomparable Barcelona, nine by the Galacticos of Madrid, three by Deportivo from La Coruña, which at the turn of the century rattled all over Europe, and now eradicates a bleak existence one point from the relegation zone, having a whole bunch of problems both purely gaming and financially-organizational.
Once the trophy went to Madrid “Atletico” (another club, in the rich history of which there are many nice pages), “Zaragoza”, “Valencia” (permanent champion of recent years, as they say in Spain, “the rest of the Examples”), Bilbain “ Athletics (the glorious grande of the past), Mallorca, Real Sociedadu and Seville.
The Super Bowl even formally refers to the previous season, between the triumphs of which it is played, but chronologically it is nevertheless closer to the starting championship, which it opens. In contrast to a tournament like the King’s Cup of Spain, which fully fits into the framework of one season. Figuratively speaking, the Super Bowl is the platform from which the Spanish Primera sets off on its long journey of 38 rounds.
And for a long time this platform has turned into a train station for two - into such a warm-up brawl between “Blaugranas” and “Blancos” (“Barcelona” and “Real”). Before the start of any season, for many years it is known with absolute probability which two clubs will share all the trophies in Spain, and perhaps also in Europe. Any other outcome is perceived as a deafening sensation and has the effect of an exploding bomb. This fully applies to such a respectable and prestigious tournament as the Spanish Cup.
Hence the fall of intrigue and spectator interest. It is not for nothing that in our time, of the variety of Spanish matches, only El Classico is able to attract a multimillion-dollar audience of viewers, which means advertisers and sponsors. This contributes to the expansion of the gigantic gulf between these two grandees and the rest of the Spanish clubs. So to say, class inequality is growing, which very seriously weakens the Spanish championship and contributes to a decline in interest in the domestic tournaments of this country.
