ASUS: System Restore: Wizard Tips

Windows operating systems, whether installed on stationary computer terminals or laptops, often have to be restored to working condition after some critical failures on their own, despite the fact that all the latest versions have built-in automated rollback tools. Next, we consider cases of Windows failure on ASUS laptops. System recovery on them can be performed in several ways, including both the OS tools themselves and the manufacturer’s tools. In some cases, it is advisable to bring the laptop to life precisely using the built-in tools. But for ordinary users, we give all possible options.

General rules for system recovery on a laptop ASUS

So, let's start with the general knowledge that any owner of an ASUS laptop will need. The main methods that allow you to return the system to working condition can be called rolling back the OS to an earlier state using exclusively Windows tools and bootable media intended for this, as well as performing a complete reset to factory settings. For the second method, you can either use the built-in tools of the laptop manufacturer itself, or entrust such actions to the means of the latest versions of Windows. This applies exclusively to modifications of the eighth and higher. Immediately, note that on an ASUS laptop, restoring a Windows system using the second method and using the manufacturer’s tools returns the device to the state it was in at the time of purchase. In this case, all user data is destroyed. In the case of using Windows tools, user files and folders can sometimes be saved.

When is rollback impossible?

Since initially it was precisely those tools that the manufacturer himself took care of, it is important to clearly understand that in some cases it will be impossible to complete a full reset to the initial state. In particular, this applies to cases where the operating system itself was at least once reinstalled by the user or by someone else, a hard disk was replaced, etc. The fact is that in the laptops of this manufacturer on the hard drive there is a special section hidden from the eyes of the user on which the files necessary for recovery are located. You understand that if you delete this section or when replacing the HDD, you should not rely on this method. But further we will proceed from the fact that no one touched the OS or Winchester.

Preliminary Actions

Before proceeding with the restoration of the Windows system on ASUS devices, you must perform one required action.

Configuring BIOS boot options

When turning on the laptop, you need to enter the BIOS settings using the key indicated on the start screen (depending on the model, F1, F2, Del or the specified combinations), go to the Boot section, find the Boot Booster parameter, press Enter to open its menu options and set the disabled state (Disabled). Then you need to save the settings (F10) and exit the BIOS, after which an automatic reboot will follow.

System Restore with Built-in Tools

When restarting before loading the operating system, you now need to press the F9 key (similar to the way the F8 key is used to call up the start menu), after which the built-in reset tool will start.

Factory Restore Menu

In the window that appears, the Windows Setup rollback line (EMS Enabled) will be highlighted automatically, and to activate this item, press Enter. Next, the ASUS system recovery starts, at the initial stage of which you need to select the language and agree to erase all data on the disk.

Select a partition to restore Windows

Now the most important thing! When you select the partition in which you want to restore the installed originally installed OS, the first partition is selected, and the continue button is pressed. After that, the laptop may restart several times, and during the recovery process, you may be prompted to enter some data. NOTHING to enter anything! The system will write the necessary information on its own.

System recovery process

Just leave the laptop alone for a while and wait for the desktop to appear.

Note: entering personal data will only be necessary at the stage of user selection.

Using standard methods

If the partition with the system tool is damaged, when replacing the hard disk or when installing another version of the OS (for example, Windows of the tenth modification), you can also roll back. To do this, you can use the standard recovery section in the Control Panel by selecting the desired time point from the list. For an ASUS laptop, restoring Windows 10 and earlier eighth versions in terms of factory reset can be done from the update and recovery section in the options menu.

Windows 10 Recovery Tools

In this case, you can use either a full reset to the factory state (operating system, not a laptop with its original OS), or use special boot options for troubleshooting, but with saving user files. Using the error correction item at the boot stage can also help if the system fails to boot for some reason.

Note: if the OS cannot be started from the hard drive, you will have to use any bootable media with the installation distribution kit or LiveCD to access the rollback tools.

Additional solutions

Finally, on ASUS laptops it is not always advisable to restore the system using the above methods. In the case of not particularly critical failures, you can use some diagnostic tools. So, for example, when starting from removable media, you can call up the command line (either by going to the menu or using the quick combination Shift + F10), and then use the Bootrec.exe tool with additional attributes. First, you can enter the additions “/ fixmbr” and “/ fixboot” (without quotes) one after the other after the main command. If this does not help, you can overwrite the bootloader by adding the “/ RebuildBCD” attribute. It is possible that it will be possible to bring the system to life by checking the hard disk using the CHKDSK commands or specialized programs such as Victoria HDD, which can also be launched from removable storage media.
