The Emotional Tone Scale is a very important Scientology technology tool that allows you to control your emotions. It is widely used by adherents of this teaching in everyday life. For many years, Ron Hubbard conducted rigorous research, testing, and observation, sometimes taking several hours in a row. As a result, he revealed the order in which our emotions pass from a serene worldview to a complete immersion in depression. He is the first to come up with the idea of starting to study what was previously taken for granted and not amenable to analysis.
What is Scientology?
The etymology of the word "Scientology" goes back to the Latin scio, which means "to know," and to the Greek logos, which translates as "teaching." Joined together, they form a structure that can be interpreted as “knowledge of how to know.” This peculiar spiritual practice arose in the 50s of the XX century, its founder was Ronald Hubbard. Scientology teaches us to understand our nature, to listen to emotions and to be able to interpret them. She helps to understand herself. Scientology can be compared to homeopathy in medicine. There is nothing authoritarian in it, it is only a system of knowledge intended for study.

A similar philosophy can be found in the books of Carlos Castaneda. With the help of certain techniques and practices, a person is invited to master the skills of studying his own personality and managing his emotions and conditions. In Scientology, the emotional tone scale is the cornerstone theory. It helps in communicating with people, in establishing interpersonal contacts. But even for people not familiar with Scientology, it can be very useful. At least for general development.
How can the emotional tone scale help in everyday life?
You probably often noticed how a person who has everything - work, a strong family, stable financial situation - most of the time looks like he is on the verge of ruin? Many of us have friends who constantly complain of boredom, apathy, and a loss of interest in life for no apparent reason. And no matter how you assure them that life is beautiful, you just need to look around, their mood does not improve, and they continue to sigh, mourning their miserable being. It is also difficult to get a person out of a state of deep grief. No jokes and funny grimaces will help him laugh and forget the negative experiences. And the point here is not only in the significance of the loss, but also in the fact that a person cannot jump over several emotional stages. This is exactly what Ron Hubbard found out in his research. What is this amazing staircase?
Emotional Arithmetic
Years of research have allowed Ron Hubbard to calculate the exact number of conditions that a person can experience. According to his theory, the number of emotions is 41 positions. At first glance, this may seem surprising and even unbelievable; it seems that there should be many more. However, many hours of observation made it possible to identify the exact order in which they arise, and such data can be trusted.

The Hubbard tone scale is a digital ruler marked out according to the ratio of positions. The highest level, on which a person feels all-consuming happiness and complete peace, is indicated by the number 40 and is called the serenity of existence. To get to it from the previous one - the postulates - it will be necessary to overcome the barrier of 10 points. Next come the games (22), action (20), delight (8), aesthetics (6) and enthusiasm (4). Emotion joy corresponds to the figure of 3.5. So if you consider yourself to be a completely happy person who is currently in high spirits, you can realize how far you really are from the ideal of Scientology science.
The following is a block of neutral emotions such as strong interest (3.3), conservatism (3), moderate interest (2.9), satisfaction (2.8), disinterest (2.6), boredom (2.5) and monotony (2,4). As you descend to negative emotions, the number of steps decreases exponentially.
Negative emotions
At the bottom of the Hubbard Staircase, all the most unpleasant feelings are crammed on just two marks. Antagonism, hostility and pain vary by one tenth of a unit. What follows is anger (1.5), hatred, indignation and lack of empathy with the same ratio. Unspoken indignation separates from indifference only five hundredths of a unit. With the same margin should be hidden animosity.
Further within the unit 17 negative emotions are placed, including anxiety, fear, despair, horror, hopelessness, apathy, futility and others. And so on until the complete death of the body.
Explanation of Values
To understand the potential of a person’s life force and its relation to reality, it’s enough to determine where the emotional state is located on the scale . The levels of emotions, presented in such a visual form, help to establish contact with a stranger and improve relationships with loved ones. Having determined where you are located on the scale, it’s much easier to find the path you need to follow. And this is not just a generalized psychological self-suggestion, but a specific guide to action.
Lower steps
Proximity to death atrophies almost any emotion, a person falls into a state of apathy - on the Hubbard scale this corresponds to a value of 0.05 tone. Woeful experiences due to loss force a person to behave accordingly - this is 0.5 on a scale. If a person only anticipates a near loss, then he is in a state of fear, that is, at the level of 1 tone. Hidden hatred is manifested from the memory of losses, when a person does not dare to express his emotions openly - this is hidden hostility (1.1 on the scale). If he tries to resist the threat of loss, then he is angry, which corresponds to 1.5 tones. Suspicions that a loss is about to happen, gives rise to indignation and antagonism - these are 2 on the Hubbard scale.
2 to 4
The loss of interest in life is characterized by a state when depression has not yet occurred, but one cannot yet call it a joyful attitude. A person cannot find new goals, he is overcome by inhibition. This is boredom, or 2.5 on the Hubbard scale. A more socialized, but still cautious person who is able to achieve their goals will take the position of conservatism (3 tones on a scale).
More rosy emotions are available to people who are full of energy and are looking to the future with hope. Such individuals will be awarded the Scientology 4 mark. This position is available only to a very limited circle of people. By nature, most of us are around 2.8 tones.
Acute and chronic tones
To start using the table for its intended purpose, you need to understand the important feature of emotions. A certain condition lasting a long time is called chronic. However, a person can “jump” into a more negative emotion under the influence of an event or irritation, and then again return to his usual attitude. Such tones are called sharp. If the influence is too strong, then a person can be stuck at a low level for decades. Anyone who has experienced a lot of pain, experienced many losses, will have a tendency to fixate on one of the lower values. If he will deviate into lighter states, then it will be insignificant and not for long. His everyday behavior will correspond to the main tone.
Who will come in handy?
Emotions and relationships are inextricably linked and mutually affect each other. A fleeting experience can weaken the two strongest bonds. Often arising misunderstanding between close people is caused by the fact that we do not always realize the mechanism of emotion and its further life in us. Behind the scenes, we decided that this area could not be controlled, except that by the method of special Buddhist training we would learn to control our feelings and bring ourselves into a state of enlightenment through meditation.
However, the scale of emotional tones gave hope to those who want, continuing to live a secular life, still establish interpersonal contact.
Application technique
The first thing to understand before you begin to successfully interact with people is that you should not hope for understanding if you and your interlocutor are at a great distance on the Hubbard scale. Trying to help a person stuck in a state of apathy, it is completely useless to talk with him in a tone of enthusiasm. He just won’t hear you. To do this, you will need to "go down" to it several steps down and "raise" it to your level gradually. Only by correctly understanding the tone scale can you overcome this distance with ease.
First, determine if possible the most accurate emotion that owns your counterpart. Then mentally imagine the Hubbard scale. Having found out what state will be half a ton or a tone higher, start communicating with him in this very emotion. By gradually overcoming the steps in this way, you will help him overcome the crisis.
Good examples
Often, communication with one or another person is uncomfortable for us. We intuitively begin to avoid meeting him, believing that the reason for this is simply the dissimilarity of the characters. Knowing the Hubbard scale, you can absolutely accurately determine why we should not face these people. This helps when choosing a partner for the relationship, and when selecting personnel for work.
If a person is chronically in the emotion of experiencing apathy or anger, it will be very difficult to interact with him. But it's still worth a try. Try to respond angrily with disinterest; hostility with boredom. If everything is not hopeless, it will become much easier for your partner to rise to you than if you had rained optimism on him. Conversely, communication with someone who is on the same tone with you will be simple and full of understanding.
Self improvement
The emotional tone scale can help you personally. Try to consciously maintain yourself in the upper positions of this ladder. Indeed, emotion joy rarely comes by itself - usually it is the result of serious work on oneself. Falling into anger or despair, you will understand that you have to leave this state through pain and boredom, and to get rid of fear, you will need to overcome hatred. It is better not to succumb to negative emotions, so as not to experience an even more painful way out of them.
Famous Scientology Adherents
Although Scientology is a fairly young science, it has become incredibly popular nowadays. This is probably one of the most successful modern teachings that provide an alternative to traditional religions. Scientology practices are followed by many prominent politicians, actors, musicians, athletes, and other public figures. The celebrity Scientologist leader is, of course, Tom Cruise. Due to the fact that he praises this doctrine at every convenient and inconvenient occasion, even those who do not watch Hollywood films have become aware of it. He regularly participates in charity events, emphasizing that this is done in the name of good, as the Scientology religion teaches. In addition, he even opened several Scientology centers so that the teaching could be disseminated as quickly as possible.
In his own words, John Travolta, Scientology helped to cope with the loss of his mother, since then he also became an active follower of this trend. Together with his wife Kelly Preston, he can compete in promoting Scientology even to Tom Cruise.
Other famous names include Will Smith, Lisa Maria Presley, Kersti Ellie, Nicolas Cage, Elizabeth Moss, Chica Korea, Isaac Hayes. All of them are very successful and sought-after actors and musicians, which is the best advertising of Scientology.
Scientology in Russia
In our country, this science has not taken root. The Russian Orthodox Church actively condemned it, demanding that the government ban the spread of Scientology sects. A loud scandal erupted when one of the former leaders of the Church of Scientology Vladimir Ivanov made a public appearance in the press, calling his co-religionists fraudsters and swindlers. He exposed this organization as a purely commercial organization, recruiting irresponsible citizens to extort money.
To follow or not to follow these methods is everyone's personal choice. It is not at all necessary to join the Church of Scientology in order to use its theories. Hubbard’s emotional tone scale is a fairly innocent teaching. And if it helps you make contact with others, then why not use it?
