Burton Albion is a club with a rather unusual history. The fact is that this is not the first team that was founded in the city of Burton. However, all previous teams were disbanded due to financial problems. And all because of the fact that in Burton has long been preferred rugby, rather than football. That is why the fact that Burton Albion was able to stay afloat is sufficient to draw attention to it.
Championships
The club was founded in 1950, so we can say that by football standards he is quite young. Burton Albion could not achieve much success, but sometimes he managed to take first place in one of the lower leagues to rise a notch. So he made his way to the Championship, which is the second league in England.
The road to success began only in 2000, when the club was first able to climb into second place in the sixth league in England. The next year he repeated his success, and in 2002, “Burton Albion” won the Northern Premier League, earning a ticket to the fifth league, that is, to the Football Conference. There, the club played for seven years, after which in 2009 he was able to win the tournament and get a ticket to the fourth league. The club stayed in the Second Football League for another six years, until its sharp progress began.
In 2015, the team won the championship and received a ticket to the First Football League, which he could win the next year. To date, the club has been playing in the Championship for the second year in a row and hopes to stay there even longer.
Cups
Burton Albion United is a club that has won a fairly large number of cups, but none of them are large. The greatest success can be considered reaching the final of the Football Association Cup in 1987, in which Burton, unfortunately, lost. But he, for example, won the Southern League Cup three times, as well as numerous small trophies that make the team quite influential at the lower levels. However, at a high level, it still does not show outstanding results. Although it is definitely worth noting that the club’s progress in recent years is impressive.
Eurocups
Unfortunately, “Burton” recently appeared for the first time in its history in the Championship, therefore, so far, it has not taken part in any of the European tournaments. As you know, the best teams of the first leagues of all European countries get access to these tournaments, and the Championship is the second league, so the club will have to try a lot to get its first ticket to Eurocups. For now, he needs to focus on staying in the Championship and continuing to progress in order to reach the Premier League.
This moment
As you already learned, last season for Burton was the first that the club spent in the Championship. He played more than worthy, ending the season in twentieth place, which guaranteed the preservation of a place in the tournament. This season, the situation is about the same, because Burton is in 21st place with 13 points in 16 matches. Only one point separates the team from Birmingham, located in the relegation zone.
What about the FA League Cup? The first two rounds, “Burton” was pretty confident, beating “Oldham Athletic” with a score of 3: 2, and then “Cardiff City” with a score of 2: 1. However, in the third round the club got an opponent whom it would be impossible to pass. The sign of the match was as follows: “Burton Albion” - “Manchester United”. Although the players did not have much hope, they fought to the last and were rewarded for it. They conceded four goals, and the other team would have put up with the rout, but Burton continued to fight, and in the first minute added, the 35-year-old Lloyd Dyer scored a prestige goal against one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
