Miklos Feher is a well-known Hungarian professional footballer who played in the position of striker in such Portuguese clubs as Porto, Salgeirush, Braga and Benfica. On January 25, 2004, Miklos Feher died of cardiac arrest during a match between Vitoria de Guimaraes and his Benfica team. This precedent entailed a wide public outcry. The cause of death of Miklos Feher was studied and discussed for several months.
How could this even happen, because absolutely all players undergo a thorough medical examination before each match. Apparently, the Portuguese experts overlooked Feher, which led to a fatal outcome right during the football match.
Miklos spent most of his football career in Portugal, representing the four clubs above. In the Portuguese Premier League spent 80 matches and became the author of 27 goals. In the period from 1998 to 2003, he represented the national team of Hungary at international tournaments - he played 25 matches and scored 27 goals.
Biography, football career
Miklos Feher was born on July 20, 1979 in the city of Tatabánya (Hungary). Feher began his career as a youth member of the Hungarian club Gyor. Here he made his debut on a professional level in 1995, and subsequently played for the club until 1998. Speaking in the Hungarian championship, Miklos was one of the most talented and promising players. He has a lot of assists and goals.
The excellent statistics of the striker attracted a lot of attention from various European clubs. The first were the scouts of the Porto club, who offered Feher a professional contract.
Between 1998 and 2002, he was a Porto player, however, he spent most of this time renting from Salgeirush and Braga. In total, he played 13 matches for the “blue and white” and scored two goals scored. As part of Salgeirusha, he spent 14 matches and scored 5 goals (1999/2000 season), and the following year he won the Portuguese championship, playing for Braga - 26 matches and 14 goals.

On October 10, 1998, Miklos Feher made his debut for the national team of Hungary as part of the qualifying round for Euro 2000 against the national team of Azerbaijan. Feher entered the field in the sixth minute, replacing the injured compatriot Ferenc Horvath. The match ended with the unconditional victory of Hungary, Feher scored the last fourth victory goal (victory 4-0).
On October 11, 2000, Miklos scored a hat trick in the match against the Lithuanian national team (victory 6-1). In total, the attacker played 25 matches (7 goals) internationally.
Football achievements
As a Porto player, Feher became the owner of two trophies - the Portuguese Championship Cup 1998/99 and the Portuguese Super Cup 1998. As part of Benfica, Miklos Feher became the posthumous winner of the Portuguese Cup 2004.
The death of Miklos Feher on the football field
On January 25, 2004, Feher and his team arrived in Guimaraes to play a match in the 19th round of the Portuguese Premier League against the Vitoria de Guimaraes club. In the 59th minute, Miklos Feher appeared on the field as a substitute for Juan Pereira. The last half hour of playing time Mikshlos Feher demonstrated high-class football, conducting sharp attacks on the opponent’s goal. In the 90th minute of the match Feher gave an assist to Fernando Aguiar, and Benfica finally opened the scoring. The next minute of the match was marked by a warning for the Hungarian striker - Feher received a yellow card for disrupting an opponent’s attack. After the judge introduced a “mustard plaster” to him, Miklosh smiled and straightened his hair with his hand. Having run a couple of meters to the center of the football field, the Hungarian striker stopped abruptly and in the next instant bent over with his hands on his own lap. Having stood like this for about two seconds, Feher fell on the lawn of the field. After a couple of seconds, his teammates, referee and medical staff bent over him. For several minutes the football player’s heart was still beating, but when the forward of the “Reds” Tomislav Shokota ran up to the scene, Miklos was no longer breathing.
Cause of death
Miklos Feher was immediately taken away from the field on a stretcher to an ambulance car (resuscitator). 18 minutes after the fall, the footballer was taken to the Nossa Senor da Oliveira Guimaraes Medical Clinic. Repeated attempts at resuscitation of the heart were made over the athlete. All this went on for an hour.
When the medical staff fought for the life of the Hungarian athlete, the Benfica and Vitoria de Guimaraes footballers crowded outside the hospital, as well as their leadership. Miklos Feher died at 23:10 local time - 90 minutes after clinical death.
After a careful study of the history of Feher's disease, it became known that hereditary heart disease, referred to as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (autosomal dominant disease of the walls of the ventricle), killed him. In simple words, the cause of death of Miklos Feher is due to the fact that one of the ventricles of the heart of Feher was very large. In this case, it is forbidden to engage in professional sports.
At 23:40 local time, the director of the clinic announced the cause of death of Miklos Feher. As it became known later, the doctors knew that the football player could not be saved, but they continued to fight for his life, because they did not believe that everything could be fatal.
Mourning
The Benfica football club has lost a talented and promising footballer who passed away at the peak of his sporting glory. Several thousand people arrived at the new Benfica stadium in Lisbon to commemorate the athlete. The Hungarian national football team also joined this event. On January 29, the footballer was buried.
