Dry Martini Cocktail: where it came from, how to cook and what to use

The Dry Martini cocktail, or Dry Martini, is one of the most famous and sought-after cocktails around the world. It is worth noting that the drink is especially popular among members of high society. The Dry Martini cocktail was more than a hundred years old, and its most famous fans were Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill and Harry Truman. How to make a popular drink and what to drink with, we will tell in our article.

Drink history

Fame for the β€œDry Martini” cocktail came thanks to Jan Fleming, author of spy novels. The author placed a drink recipe in his first James Bond book. I wonder where Ian got this recipe, did he come up with it on his own?

As it turned out, the legendary Sukhoi Martini cocktail has nothing to do with the Martini brand. Three versions of its origin are known. According to the first theory, as far back as the middle of the 19th century, a famous bartender lived in one of the bars in the city of Martinez, whose name was Professor Jerry Thomas (he was also called the dad of all bartenders). This person had a complete encyclopedia of various cocktails.

According to legend, one day a stranger wandered into the bar where Jerry worked and offered him a piece of gold if he could surprise him. The bartender was not at a loss and mixed a cocktail of gold color for a stranger. The drink, which was invented by the guy, included 50 ml of gin, 25 ml of red vermouth, 10 ml of Sour Cherry liqueur, 5 ml of orange bitter, a small slice of orange and ice. This drink is considered by many to be the prototype of dry martini.

According to the second theory, at the beginning of the twentieth century in one of the hotels in New York the Italian bartender invented the elixir of calm. However, this recipe for the Dry Martini cocktail does not coincide with today's. The composition of the drink included lemon juice, olives, gin and ice.

According to the third version, the cocktail that interests us came to fame after the Bond stories. But here a rather complicated story happened. In the first episodes of the drink, which is being prepared for James, he calls Vesper, but in the middle of the adventure his name changes to Dry Martini, and in the end to Martini with Vodka.
